I will help if I can....I am a space planner/designer at IKEA. You could always email me photos and floor plans. Or maybe you just need a martini the size of your head?
although it's really cool that you work for ikea. i haven't been to the store in helsinki yet because wax doesn't want to go, but i long to. i lie around thinking about fabric and paint colors and things like that. the fact that our walls are all white, and the other fact that i'm a lazy ass too lame to move the furniture around and paint the room, are deeply painful to me.
the centerpiece of our livingroom is the giant frodo head posters from FOTR. they're wax's most prized, uh, posters.
Well, I could always give suggestions on any kind of furnishings, cos before I worked for IKEA (reg hours job) I designed sets and costumes for theatre-and I have the Frodo poster as the centerpiece in my living room! Go figure. You might want to pull three colors from the poster and start there, the green of the cloak, the warm gold of his skin tone (and the ring) and perhaps chocolate brown? Good luck!
the posters weren't my choice. i like brighter colors. but i just didn't want to make her fight about them. she likes them so much.
the problem, then, though, is that i don't know how much i'd like a livingroom decorated in olive and gold and honey and brown, you know? oh, it'd be pretty enough, and if i had a ton of money for fabric and stuff i'd be all over rich and soft things like olive velvet--the most beautiful sofa cover i've ever seen was like that.
and the other problem is that one thing that HAS to stay in there is a bright red and orange shag rug and the other are our nice muted brown couch covers. that kinda sets either a primary colors or a oranges-and-reds theme.
maybe in the accent pillow department of the department store inspiration will strike. i don't have a sewing machine right now, and i really can't afford one.
How about the walls in the same color as the couch cover, and just use accents of orange and red to tie in the rug? This could be a few throw pillows, a vase or even a lampshade or wall sconce. Just call your look eclectic! A room doesn't have to be done at once, but you might want to collect a few pics, swatches and paint chips of what you have, (room measurements) and then if you find something when you shop you can see if it works.
I'm constantly surprised at work when I design for people and they want to do a room all over at once, all with stuff from the store. I have lots of pieces I've inherited and picked up over the years, and I wouldn't want to toss them.
