I have been reading borderline-awful X-files fanfic and I feel your pain.

it was in girlslash and claimed to be mary-kate/ashley but it was really a smug angry ashley stumbling on mk (high on coke) blowing some guy in a bathroom, beating her up a bit and threatening to blackmail her. fun times, eh? i did find some good harry/snape yesterday.

okay, that scenario could be hot...but without the modifier "smug" and maybe after a twincest fight when mary kate goes out and behaves badly because she's just so fucking upset, and ashley's still angry, and angrier about the way mary kate handled it, but the fight was her fault in the first place and she feels guilty so she goes to apologize, she thinks mary kate is in the bathroom doing more coke or something and she walks in and oh my fucking god what are you DOING and then they have rough claiming angrysex. But, um, it would take a better author than me to make that really good. And clearly, a better author than the one you were reading.

I don't see the misogynistic side of fandom often, for some reason, maybe because I almost entirely read off recs sets or trusted authors, but it's so ugly when it comes out.

i'm not sure whether the author was misogynistic, you know? that's the funny thing. i just really don't like reading ugly things, and ashley was truly angry and as far as i could tell, didn't like mary kate particularly, or really even care about her all that much. selfish, concerned about her image, and... ugly to the 'little people' too.

I love it that you don't like reading ugly things. Because so many people seem to. I can always trust your recs. ♥.

i'm glad you feel you can trust my recs! ♥ you know, i never use ugly that way out loud ("he was being ugly to her!")--although i grew up in the pancreas of dixie, my daddy would say, and hear it all the time. i find it annoying. but using aesthetic descriptors for fiction is okay. that's DIFFERENT. ;)

I hate it when that happens.

Or, wait, no - what I almost hate more is when a story is very well written, but that the writer clearly doesn't understand the characters. At all.
