happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] kaneko!

we went into town today to pick up hbp--the bookstore opened early (7 am) for that purpose, and two of the clerks were wearing witches' hats.  one of them also had on a green dress and a gray wig, which, come to think of it, was probably meant for a mcgonagall costume, although her hair was loose.  anyway, it was cute.  seeing other big geeks in public always gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling, even if in this instance they were maybe a bit more geeky than me (i never did get around to shortening that gryffindor tie to make it wearable in public--too bad because it was a bit chilly, and i'd've been more comfortable in my white blouse).  wax has started reading the book now.  i am content to wait until she is done.  (also her mom gave us a modern, conversational english translation of some of the icelandic eddas, which i'm pretty interested in.)

and then i napped and we watched   i was surprised by how much i liked caldwell.  and i really, really liked novak, the asgaard-interface girl on his ship.  the scene where they found out sheppard was still alive was really wonderful, and here i reiterate that hewlett, besides having an incredible gestalt hotness, is a really remarkable face actor.  his face! aww.

the scene where teyla pulled ford off beckett was good, although otherwise i'm really not feeling the new ford plot.  and sheppard!  aww!  he's really having a hard time, isn't he?  at least the new commander is promising so far.  but his plan turns out badly (although then his other plan works beautifully) and then everett's all, "not like i'm actually asking you to kill me right now, but it sure would've been great if you couldn've done it at the time" and he's like "!!!", and then ford turning--ford!  his little friend, his protegé!  after all those hours helping with his homework, bonding over basketball, being a positive male role model!  and ford didn't trust him which has to hurt since shep is all about the trust.  he's always trusting people when it's not really wise to--his loyalty is stronger than his logic.  ford didn't absorb that entirely, i guess, but then, ford was clearly in the grip of The Crazy.

the Mutually Exclusive Cloak and Shield plot--i can't remember how it actually goes, but i seem to remember a fair amount of it with space battles in star trek: tng.  of course atlantis is less maneuverable than your average space ship ("it's a city!  not a yo-yo!"), so perhaps they will do something cool and original with it.

i had this feeling of uncomfortableness in the weir and sheppard hug scene--as if a thousand voices cried out in fear that the writers were going to Go There canonically for a relationship and were silenced.  i just really, really hope they're wise enough not to.  no canon attachments is the way to keep all your shippers happy, dudes, and also, just no--that's totally not what the show, the plot, or either one of the characters needs.  (and then there's the whole "but i'm gay!" element.)  but i also do like the weir and sheppard thing and find it very interesting as long as it's not romantic--thinking about their complementary sort-of equal positions, the trust and interdependence growing, how the city needs both of them and they each need the other to lead it.  i think elizabeth dreads losing him and doing her job alone (aside from the personal attachment which i see as platonic)--everyone but him is an underling, so perhaps in a way he's the only one she can even partially, conditionally show weakness to.

i'm left now with the strong urge to make screencaps--some of those shots, especially the cityscapes and sheppard's face (well, duh) were just too gorgeous.  and i'm also grateful that no big chunks of canon have turned over--it felt more like the end of the last season than anything else, so it hasn't messed with my delicate mid-story mojo.
