isilya and i were comparing our track records of souls crushed (isilya:  too many to number; me: possibly one), which made me think about it and decide that falling in love doesn't have a gentling, softening effect on a mean personality, but, in fact, the opposite.

[21:57] cim: what actually happens is that you find meanness sexy in other people
[21:55] Isilya: I mean, who is made nice by love?
[21:57] cim: if you like it in yourself, you fall for someone else mean
[21:55] Isilya: you just become more irritating to the people around you
[21:55] Isilya: MORE smug
[21:57] cim: then you love about them that you can gloat together
[21:55] Isilya: MORE arrogant
[21:57] cim: because no one else appreciates your meanness as well

finding a partner to match your level of meanness can be all breezy and affirming.  and naturally, all of this applies to rodney and john.  what's even more fun than (or, okay, just as fun as, anyway) snarking at each other?  snarking together at other people!  it bonds, it creates a warm glow of familiar feeling.  it promotes teamwork!

[21:57] cim: rodney probably comes home happy and humming
[21:57] cim: while they fry shrimp in wine and garlic together
[21:57] cim: he tells john about the egos he's crushed
[21:57] cim: john is amused and kisses him and scolds him for eating raw garlic

(i picture, oh, a cutting board or two, the running water, the stereo burbling along in the background.  they shout over it.)

[21:55] Isilya: cim, I love it
[21:57] cim: over dinner, john relates the bits of subtle snark he laid down during the day.
[21:55] Isilya: you should lj that

"so what did you say to that?"

"what else, rodney?  i thanked him for his input--"

rodney snorted.  "right, i'm sure it was really useful."

"don't get snot in my green beans," said john mildly, snaking an arm around rodney's waist to get a slice of radish.  "--and told him i didn't think it would take long to give it all the consideration it deserved."

[21:57] cim: rodney is gleeful and demands that john be meaner tomorrow.
[21:57] cim: "finish him off! it wouldn't take much! let me do it.  i can drop by at lunch time."
[21:57] cim: "if you remember."
[21:55] Isilya: HAHAHAHA
[21:57] cim: in the end, rodney is so turned on by john's meanness that they have sex on the wall in the hallway, without clearing the table
[21:55] Isilya: YES
[21:55] Isilya: <3 <3 <3 <3
[21:57] cim: <3<3<3<3<3

isilya uses the memory to warm her heart on long, cold lukwarm winter nights (well, she lives in australia; it doesn't get that cold).

Dude, that pretty nearly describes me and [livejournal.com profile] blorky, except that we're not actually dating. We've been so snarky to each other that coworkers have been afraid of having either of us be mean to them. I like being mean! Yay!
