many, many spoilers within
18 Nov 2005 12:50 amyay! so, we just saw and it was great, although not as good as i expected. i heard from hp ana that "nothing but good reviews" were coming in and wax had noted that rotten tomatoes had given it full marks. so the parts that were rushed and the parts that were thin or hung funny were a little eh. the problems were partly from the inevitable result of squishing down to fit in the allotted time, but partly also from poor choices about stuff like how much explanation they need. there were lots of great brilliant moments and lots of cuteness that had me drawing airhearts. ralphdemort! sirius! david tennant! jason isaacs! snape! which brings me to a couple of points about snape:
+ points about snape
now some other points.
+ emma is good.
+ wow, that was really not a film for the kidlets. moaning myrtle scene?
+ the yule ball was hilarious, but it was totally not believable that people didn't recognise hermione. she looked pretty much exactly like she usually does, only pinker. it's not even unknown in movie!verse for her to wear her hair in a fetching knot with stray ringlets.
+ the hermione/ronness of the yule ball was fairly plain, i suppose, but it also seemed not quite well enough supported in the rest of the movie. and i don't think it would really show the harmonians anything (that is, if they had any connection with reality) when you set it up against the harry and hermione scenes, like in the tent before the dragon task.
+ harry so listens to bright eyes--NOTHING but bright eyes! the teen angst was ROLLING off the screen in waves! wax and i kept exchanging whispered remarks about the calendar hanging itself.
+ too bad there wasn't more fleur and cedric. the word 'veela' wasn't mentioned once--which didn't interfere with comprehensibility, really, because ron's crush as presented was totally believable if you assume her to just be a pretty blonde. but still. and cedric! so cute! and the sparks he struck off harry!
+ tom felton keeps getting less attractive.
+ michael gambon is really quite great as dumbledore.
+ oh ralphdemort! that was the swishiest evil villain EVER. wax postulates that ralph had in mind a mixture of russian ballet and shakespeare. i particularly liked that time when he menaced harry, and did an elaborate sort of sweeping twirl around the whole cemetary all as punctuation for one sentence. but his voldemort was actually quite good, i thought, although i wasn't scared, and his recognisable ralphness was endearing. i even recognised the shape of his skull. but i thought his delivery and whatnot were very good.
+ i like the dark mark. quite stylish.
+ CHO'S LITTLE ACCENT
+ ron and seamus. *eyebrow wriggle*
+ neville! HEART! oh, man, NEVILLE. so cute. who was it who said that actor is going to be quite attractive in a few years and could end up a ladies' man? i think she was a wise woman.
+ MR WEASLEY: death eaters! everybody run like hell, but don't stick together! fred and george, you're in charge of ginny; hermione, keep harry and ron from dying of sheer stupidity, and, heh, good luck with that. HERMIONE: no WAIT! don't leave me alone with them! RON: ooh! shiny over there! HARRY: buh? HERMIONE: shit. harry! over here! HARRY: buh? [HARRY almost kills himself from sheer stupidity.] HERMIONE: next time i'm taking ginny.
+ which brings me to ginny! her little fur boots and her charming ball gown with the little collar! her wacky sweater! i really wonder about this actress, though, whether she's going to be ready to pull her weight, which will be much greater, in movie 5 and movie 6. we haven't seen that much of her yet. and of course they had no way to tell really, they had to cast her as like an eight year old. i do like her, though.
+ rita skeeter was entertaining. they kept her part cut to almost exactly the right length i think.
+ hahahha filch's cat! also, a very pretty cat.
+ why were people suddenly hanging out together--like cho in the middle of a group of gryffindors, fleur randomly suddenly in the middle of one of the hogwarts tables on the first night? and why was padma in gryffindor?
+ angelina was hot. the scene where fred asks her out was hilarious.
+ points about snape
1. they can't actually be making the snape/harryness of these films on purpose, i suppose, but it almost seems hard to credit that it's by accident. on the other hand, as others pointed out, everyone was sort of pinging off harry, it wasn't just snape. a side-effect of the story itself and the directing and whatnot i suppose.
2. this seemed like an astonishingly warm and fuzzy snape. he was sort of nice, or at least good. my original conclusion was that this indicates he will not actually, in book 7, turn out to be a bad guy--rowling's input, like, because otherwise that doesn't seem to make much sense. but then sugar pointed out that perhaps they're trying to make his sudden but inevitable betrayal more exciting when it happens.
3. he was just extra cute in this film. his little shirt cuffs, the potion cupboard, the scene where he kept smacking harry and ron on the head. brilliant.
