first run-through episode reaction log, composed as i watched and polished very briefly for your edification.

i do like kara now, but i feel like: what is she doing here?  she's like the wendy of this year's final four.

AHAHH--fern gives the designers advice and she says BEING NICE.  DANIEL TURNING AND LOOKING AT SANTINO.  it was so obvious!  1: burn.  2:  how TACKY!  ahahahhahahaha.

at this point, while they're making their drawings, i can't bring to mind one aesthetic that kara has.  i wonder what the theme of her collection would be--she doesn't seem to have thought about it either.

oh, come on, daniel.  yes, they dissed your best friend omg.  he went home, boo hoo.  but what the shit is "santino is arrogant and more credit should have been given to nick, therefore i'm mad at santino"?  santino wasn't on the judging panel that sent nick home.  aside from doing a shitty job and making a sleeve fall off on the runway, what could he have done?  it almost looks like he was on your side.  anyone would have thought he wanted to go home with as little time as he spent on that jumpsuit.

it's interesting how they have different interpretations of what's going on.  santino feels the distance between himself and the other three so he's just "saying thank you and putting his head back down" when kara gives him a compliment;  we've seen the other three designers walking apart in a row from him a couple of times, yet from kara we get that the atmosphere in general is friendly but it's santino who hasn't said a word to anyone else.  granted, he's responding stiffly to the overtures she makes, but is it really that he's not speaking to them or is it mutual?  and where is the origin of that?  santino never had a problem speaking to other people (usually in as insulting a manner as possible) before.

oh, go santino: "dude, you're not making me feel guilty.  i'm going to say what i'm going to say.  i definitely feel like daniel's full of shit for all that."  which i think is exactly how he should feel.  but i notice he doesn't seem to be able to pull himself together enough in the face of actual confrontation to deliver that.  instead he says it in an interview.  well, that's okay, i don't think he really wants to make daniel feel bad either.

daniel seems to think the final three should be a matter of ... moral rectitude?  i am starting to hope that he doesn't make the final three because his harping on this theme is so irritating, although i don't at all think he'll be eliminated.

oh, a party with some season one designers!  how exciting.  AUSTIN IS SO CUTE.  i love jay and santino together, ahahahahahah.  i wanted more of that.

the scene with santino and dv--daniel's surprised little face at "i liked your dress", i don't know if this is because it goes against a grudge he thinks santino bears or a very fixed opinion of daniel's quality he likewise imagines santino has... or if he's surprised that santino would say something nice.  now, i don't know if he IS realising this, but what i think it really underlines and what he should realise is that it isn't personal for santino and he isn't bearing a grudge--santino is just extremely open and straightforward to the point of ... childishness, almost.  the opinions he gives are always real and they're always what he's thinking.

the models come in.  i'm so excited!  santino's gown looks kind of uh? as she pulls it up--that isn't a sash, the gold is asymmetrical--but oh, then she moves around and i think it's stunning.  i can't wait to see it on the runway.

in the "coming up"s we see nina and michael saying they wanted to see it more different.  and santino smirking.  rightfully, i feel.

the music starts and heather comes out on the runway.  OH WOW.  i don't care if it's costumey.  i love it.  I WANT THAT DRESS.  that gold dress is. it's exquisite.  okay... i'm loving chloe's too.  not as much as santino's, but the silver, the elegance--much better than kara's or daniel's.  rebecca looks gorgeous (as daniel says), but that's not because of the dress, it's because rebecca can work it.  daniel, you've made a completely basic bridesmaid gown that just happens to be really well-fitted.  kara's was... okay, not stunning.  about equal in design to daniel's, i felt, though not in execution perhaps.

hmmm, i like daniel's just barely better. oh, kara, the hem is uneven.  michael's totally right--she's wearing a dress that's much more interesting and much better.  i love the blue sash and the blue neck, the colours and that styling combined with that shape, that's really intriguing. "i would just trust me... it's just like bam, you'd be like bam." you'd just trust you? did it escape you, kara, that the whole point of this challenge was so they wouldn't have to just trust anyone about what the collection would be like?  d'oh.

oh, so daniel explains that he can make a beautiful dress in his sleep, but what matters to him is "that one thing that makes you say wow"?  daniel, the flower power dress was wow!  this dress is not wow.  he asks, somewhat hurt, if they think it's boring and michael says it is!  the way i see daniel blinking and responding on the runway sometimes, i think:  wow, his parents really drilled those manners into him... and i think the screws are showing.

SANTINO MADE UP A LITTLE STORY.  HAHAHAH HIS LITTLE STORY.  AHAHAHAH SANTNO!  YOUR STORIES.  I LOVE YOUR STORIES.  "if it looks elegant and it has a craziness to it, it still is wearable, because it still is elegant."  iman speaks words of wisdom, but they may be falling on deaf ears.  it's not like santino hasn't heard that before.  and nina and michael keep saying to him again and again about reigning it in and it isn't that he's not listening, it's clear that he has listened.  i think it's that he understands and disagrees.  as jay said in an interview, "that’s why Calvin Klein makes fucking tunics and why Betsey Johnson makes fucking floral chiffons."  hmm, they criticise santino--with some harshness, although i don't feel too badly about it and i don't think he does either.

michael is right--the darts on chloe's look dressmakery.  i wonder how she could have worked around that, though?

oh!  their speeches are incredibly interesting!  i can't believe kara and daniel both said they would eliminate chloe, i'm astonished--maybe they feel there's no chance of santino being out and they're trying to do damage control?  but i don't think chloe should go home, in fact, i think she does have a very definite (though perhaps not extremely unique?) viewpoint.  i wouldn't send her out. yeah, she had a hard time with the fit and the puckering of the seams, and maybe she isn't stepping outside of the box--maybe not.  okay, she's not.  but i love her dresses, and i love this dress too, if it could be um.  remade with excellent fit and better sewing--

--and michael, can i please say--STOP BRONZING.  STOP. BRONZING.

i think daniel has less point of view than chloe or santino.  i see a possibility that in a collection he would demonstrate less of one than kara--because what i see of his so far is "make this woman sexay", a kind of "could run in a men's magazine" vibe.  i'm curious to see more of kara, actually.  but--

SANTINO.  OH BABY!  he--is he crying?  when they say he's in and he folds in half and he cries backstage!  and beats the floor, oh, santino!  ♥! ♥♥♥♥♥♥

daniel--daniel won?  what?  he had the best construction, but otherwise, i don't know, that wouldn't have been even my second choice for the win.  and then, wow.  i'm really uncertain at this point--kara or chloe?  i'm surprised by that uncertainty, because before this challenge i never would have been.  but i want chloe to be in.  "we question if you have the passion"?  they SO HAVE seen the filming of the previous day.

now kara is out and giving her exit speech.  how much does kara love fashion? "it's like my heartbeat next to my heart"? ahahah, what does that mean?  kara, you're crunchy and you smoke raffia.  chill out, girl.  we love you.

okay, i'm happy with this result, i suppose.  five months later, iman walked into a room and turned around and there was a little pixie in a diamond-pattern pullover.  EE IT'S DANIEL.  DANIEL, oh my god, he got a haircut!

OH MY GOD I'M SO EXCITED FOR NEXT WEEK.  andraé, how can you be so gorgeous?  and i love daniel's rosemary's baby hair.  and kara, kara's hair is dyed!  i love that too!  andraé is wearing a neck scarf!  ♥♥♥♥!  AHAHAHAHA MISSI.  YOU WERE SO RIGHT ABOUT DANIEL FRANCO.  daniel franco, seriously, wtf was up with that?

first off: dude, you are so biased. yes, santino is funny and brazen and a rebel, but i would not, personally, wear any of the things he's designed throuhout the entire show.

i completely agree with you on kara, both in that i disliked her in the beginning but she started to grow on me in the later episodes and towards the end i was really rooting for her not to get kicked out too soon. i think chloe has by far the superior talent and skill, but i wasn't impressed at all by her dress for this challenge. that seam in the back made it look like grace's ass went all the way down to her knees.

ok i'll admit it, i'm biased too, but i love daniel. i thought his dress was lovely. it was safe, maybe on the edge of boring, but i thought it looked great and it was definitely a lot better than kara's.

also, the whole santino thing? he's being a dick. i know you like that he's anti-social and straight-forward, but there it is. the others were definitely a lot more reasonable.

i was really surprised by everyone nominating chloe to be out, because kara really isn't in the same league.

umm, what else? oh yeah, i really don't like daniel's new haircut. i liked him better with the longer hair.

Eh, Santino was being a little bit of an insensitive jerk. He shouldn't have *appologized* for not going home, which is what Daniel V seemd to want from him, but he kept making those dumb "I didn't come here to make friends" remarks and snubbing people. Which is what people do on reality TV when they know they've been an ass but don't want to swallow their pride and be nice.

in the "coming up"s we see nina and michael saying they wanted to see it more different. and santino smirking. rightfully, i feel.
I agree that he was the only designer to do ANYTHING interesting for the final challenge. The other three played it so safe they were boring. If I had to choose one that wasn't Santino's, it'd be a toss-up between Daneil V and Chloe.

did it escape you, kara, that the whole point of this challenge was so they wouldn't have to just trust anyone about what the collection would be like? d'oh.
Oh lord yes. In the end, I think it was the right decision to send Kara home, much as I've grown to love her in the past 3 weeks.

I cannot wait to see what Santino whips up for Fashion Week - will it be his usual crazy concept gowns or will he go more "woman friendly" as Nina is always begging him to do? I also think this may be Daniel's chance to shine. He's won the most contests so far, but he's also played it kind of safe. EEEE!!!

although he did make friends, i don't think he did come there to do so. and i'm also not sure he ever said "i didn't come here to make friends" directly to his peers or just to the cameras, in interviews. of course saying so is a defensive move, either a justification (as in wendy pepper's case) or a kind of shield in his (well, i didn't want friends anyway!), when it's pretty obvious how much he enjoyed himself when there was friendliness throughout the boys' club. but he apologised to nick for comparing him to a turd and tried to make up with him, and nick wasn't having any. he's hurt nick's feelings before and other people's too maybe, but i'm not even sure how aware he is of those things, or if he is, that he knows what hurt them, or realises they thought about it for more than two seconds, because part of being his sort of asshole is being kind of oblivious--and genuinely insensitive, not just behaving in an insensitive manner. as for his unresponsiveness during the challenge, i don't think he was being particularly bad. for one thing, he'd already been at the other end of some notable snubbing and attacks by then, and he'd clearly seen the other three grouped against him. that perception was obviously there on his side, even if in kara's mind she was slightly more neutral. and while of course everyone knows how to say 'i'm sorry', again, santino is oblivious and rather lacking in social graces and also, i think, baffled by other people's behaviour and motivations. (he reminds me a lot of my grandpa bob.) i'm thinking he feels awkward with them in a big way and doesn't really know how to fix it nor what exactly is going on. i think the clips we see of him and daniel trying to be civil back at the room, and him covering his face as he says he likes daniel's dress and thinks it's in, support this theory.

they know how to make drama work. I'm following the UK version too, and the contestants are 1)boring, 2) bad dresmakers.

they don't have the budget or the editing-it-into-fiction skills in the british version, but i like it a lot anyway. and i think some of the contestants are really good. i don't think anyone in the american s2 is as good as christopher, for instance.
