the clearest is the element of social critique in the elephant jokes. the elephant moves through modern society, but he is himself unbound by its laws. he is peaceful and eccentric and devotes himself to such things as are forbidden: swimming, bicycling, tree-climbing. he is an unsettling element in the modern apartment: in the fridge footprints in the butter show that he has been there. put together the jokes paint a picture of a character who embodies the anarchic desire for freedom.
