this is not an update

i don't really have time to write about sugar's slash presentation, m&m's & chinese, or gcsl¹ reportedly dancing on the table in gold lamé[flocked] at the queer studies conference (and i wasn't theeere!) yet. in fact i didn't have time for the several pages of porn i wrote last night either because i need to prepare for a presentation in spanish on thursday and i don't have any of the appropriate vocabulary as yet. (last night's porn was fun but it also almost caused me to get quite muddy this morning, as porn-preoccupation made me space on the fact that a poodle was approaching perry on a very narrow sidewalk and suddenly both dogs lunged as one. i had to make a quick detour across the street.)

neither do i have time to post about the 70s swedish tv version of emil i lönneberga or my fun times babysitting wax's niece yesterday, or my brother-outlaw's plans to build a movie theatre in the library/guest room in his house, and how his geekouts are awesome, and he and i now have the same hairstyle, and why is it that little kids always pretend to be dogs?, and carmela's favourite toy at our house is a long string of giant grey pearl mardi gras beads.

so in lieu of a real entry, you can have some ohmiya from the shy granny mago.

hahahaha, wow, the licenciatura in sociology at the university of buenos aires seems to require like twice as much as the master's in sociology at åbo akademi (at least at first glance - now i look in more detail, even if it is a bit more that is mostly because they give less choice to their students - but they definitely require more specifically set out things within the social sciences. and, hey, since i hate the other social sciences more or less, i guess that this is good). licenciatura usually means bachelor's, but i suspect it's equiv. with master's anyway because...

no wait. it's not equivalent! it's really equivalent to a bachelor's, according to everything i can find - even though it's also meant to take 4- 6 years while the kandidat level is meant to be only 3 years here. i suppose it's not truly equivalent. perhaps it will be soon with the bologna process.

aiba: when participatory observation requires a truly enthusiastic participant.

i always try to relate school lectures to my current fandom loves to make them more interesting to me, but i've never before been as successful at it as i am this quarter, because aiba's enthusiastic love of experimentation (not sexual experimentation - at least, not on reality tv, who knows about in private - but experimentation like: do paper rowboats float? can juice be drunk using a recorder as a straw? what happens to cotton candy when it's dipped into liquid nitrogen?) coinciding with two separate courses on scientific methodology has been like a godsend.

so, there was a polish sociologist who was doing a participatory observation study of a group of young polish thugs whose nightly activities included crossing the border, robbing department stores on the german side and coming back and hawking the stuff. so when he wrote up the report, he was all, "so i thought it necessary to participate to gain their trust" - in other words, he broke into department stores and stole with them as part of his professional work which he then published. professor saruman was all "yeah, so he might have gone a little too far there, and you know, it's not always necessary to grab the first way to gain someone's trust if that way is stealing... you probably want to stick around and figure out another way."  he was of the opinion that the guy, besides being morally dubious, was a bit lame, i think.
