cimorenei always try to relate school lectures to my current fandom loves to make them more interesting to me, but i've never before been as successful at it as i am this quarter, because aiba's enthusiastic love of experimentation (not sexual experimentation - at least, not on reality tv, who knows about in private - but experimentation like: do paper rowboats float? can juice be drunk using a recorder as a straw? what happens to cotton candy when it's dipped into liquid nitrogen?) coinciding with two separate courses on scientific methodology has been like a godsend.
so, there was a polish sociologist who was doing a participatory observation study of a group of young polish thugs whose nightly activities included crossing the border, robbing department stores on the german side and coming back and hawking the stuff. so when he wrote up the report, he was all, "so i thought it necessary to participate to gain their trust" - in other words, he broke into department stores and stole with them as part of his professional work which he then published. professor saruman was all "yeah, so he might have gone a little too far there, and you know, it's not always necessary to grab the first way to gain someone's trust if that way is stealing... you probably want to stick around and figure out another way." he was of the opinion that the guy, besides being morally dubious, was a bit lame, i think.
aiba the sociologist would totally do something like that. "i felt i was really gaining insight into the group!" he'd say. arashi could be the gang he was studying, i thought! and i immediately paused to write this in the margin of my notes, which have a whole extra colour in them today for arashi thoughts (i always take notes in multiple colours anyway, so). he could go totally native and be like, ":D hey guys, so do we have to wear like black masks on our faces?"
then professor saruman started talking about how it can be good to have two researchers if one of them is supposed to be participating in the group. but he didn't go into it much, so i'm not sure if he meant they keep each other sane, or that one of them doesn't participate at all and just stays outside and conducts another kind of research in conjunction.
if it were participatory observation with two researchers, it would totally be aiba and jun, but if the other researcher were not going native, but doing something more detached and serious, it would be sho!
they'd meet and aiba would be dropping tv-stealing-gang slang and sho would be dubious. he would be like "how did it go this week?"
and aiba's like, "oh yeah! it was great!"
sho is cheerful, polite and businesslike: "how was the friday night? that could have been rough, right? you didn't get the feeling they didn't trust you or anything? did you hang out with them part of the time?"
and aiba's like "oh that? yeah! that! that was fine! yeah, they totally trust me i think! yeah! no, no problems! they um, let me come along with them!"
"where?"
"oh - uh - out!"
whereas if they're both researchers, jun would just be hanging out and correcting aiba's slang use and lounging and learning the secret handshake and making sardonic comments.
aiba shows up and finds jun hanging out and says, "omg why are you wearing your glasses! take those off! they won't think you're cool!"
and jun just arches his eyebrow and takes a notebook out of his pocket and writes, under his notes, "BAKA." and points it out to aiba.
then the gang would come and be like "ooh, matsujun's the professor today! watch out!" and laughing and high-fiving him, and aiba is relieved, like:
":O :D i guess the glasses were ok!" but then he's like "psst, put that away, you'll make them nervous!" when jun's taking notes.
so this gets nino's attention, and he demands, "hey! what are you writing?"
and jun would be like "don't worry, nothing you said, only the important things."
and then nino would be like, "write down that leader was late."
and ohno would be like "huh?"
aiba nudges jun and is like "they're so familiar with each other! look!" because ohno's sitting in nino's lap.
jun says, with a touch of superior exasperation, "i'm not writing that down."
and aiba's like ":O why?"
and jun's like, "i don't think they're exactly typical." and then, "hey ninomiya, could you tone it down over there? we'd like our paper to have a pg rating."
