Even though we got rid of enough garbage and recycling that we barely fit in the elevator with it last month, and also gave away our old kitchen table1, I threw away another huge quantity of stuff this weekend (without making the flat look uncluttered, mind - only getting rid of at least 1 sofa and 1 armchair could do that).

We took a big crate of dead electronics to be recycled as well as a vacuum that hasn't worked, but has been lurking in the closet, for about 6 years. We also got rid of a large Ikea bag full of old clothes, including some of Wax's that I missed in the last few closet clearouts that haven't been worn since before I moved to Finland in 2004.

Then I finally moved half our clothes (the ones we need often) from the bedroom into the livingroom closet (or rather the livingroom wall of floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinets), as I've been threatening to do for years. Wax is still attempting to become entirely nocturnal so, needless to say, our sleep schedules have not been matching up, even though she's no longer working rotating shifts. That means that it's still impossible to get dressed in the bedroom and highly inconvenient to keep clothes in there since you have to tiptoe around and try to pick them out in the dark. The cabinets in the livingroom are now about half clothes and half stuff, and likewise for the harder-to-access ones in the bedroom. (The clothes are in the middle shelves, to make them easier to reach.)

1. With regards to the kitchen table: we still don't have one. I needed a drill to attach the legs, and Wax fetched her mom's for me, but I woke up with an agonizing shoulder pain today, which was otherwise the first day I could really have put them on it. After I apply them I still have to paint the tabletop, which is awesome old weathered wood, with polyurethane to protect it. Fortunately we don't need a table much, but I will need it if I ever want to use the sewing machine again. Which would be good since I promised to hem some curtains for Wax's mom.

Wax is starting 9 weeks of work practice associated with her secretarial schooling tomorrow. I have the week off but my next Finnish class is starting a week from tomorrow. Wax's mom scoffed at our notion that Wax would be unable to dress in jeans and t-shirts for her work practice. I know that this is Finland, and she's interning in a secretarial capacity at a medical condition non-profit, but jeans and Threadless shirts does seem overly casual for an office environment, doesn't it? I will send her in slacks and a shirt that buttons on the first day, at least.
