cimorene: A very small cat peeking wide-eyed from behind the edge of a blanket (cat)
Actually as I mentioned in my last post, it's just like... all cats and kittens as far as I can tell, not to the extent of puppies, but pretty much. If you look in general through websites of breeders who are planning litters of kittens, they don't all say 'Any potential puppies from this spring's litters are already reserved and we have a long waiting list, but if you are thinking of a puppy in fall at the earliest feel free to contact us' like the dog breeders do. (I was investigating several different types of dogs out of curiosity, but mostly Finnish lapphund and poodles, about six months ago, and the last time I looked it was the same.)

There's another factor here, which is that the majority of breeders of both cats and dogs are mostly operating on Facebook now. Even the ones that do have websites, they're usually pretty old. I've looked at Cornish Rex breeder sites that were last updated in 2018, 2014, and 2012 in the last week.

We did find ONE notice from a local lady who had a young adult neutered male cat she was looking to sell, but she hasn't answered Wax's email in two weeks. 😔 She IS on Facebook but it's private so we'd have to create an account to find out if there's any further info there. Hope she's, like, okay.

Status of not-insurmountably-distant breeders of Cornish Rexes otherwise - ones who haven't put any notices up about rehoming adult cats that is:

  • Greater Turku area, planning a litter in spring (1?), info only on Facebook. We'll have to email her. (Pics on page are fun though: she also breeds afghan hounds and the Chinese hairless dogs with the long feathery tufts. There's a collage of afghan puppy and Cornish Rex on top!)

  • 2½ hours away by car, 2 hours by train; planning multiple litters this spring and summer but Wax thinks that's an unthinkable distance whereas to me it's a day trip. We used to do this like, with family friends after the Unitarian Universalist service (can't just say 'church', don't want to give a false impression of Christianity) on Sunday afternoon to go hiking and then come back the same evening? But Wax hates to drive (and I need to go to driving school... AFTER everybody is vaccinated) and while she thinks this size of train journey is okay, she's still hesitant because of course getting a kitten involves multiple visits, usually 2 or 3. Like, too hesitant to contact her unless we get negatives from some others first.

  • Greater Turku area, website not updated for several years, active on FB but all you can see without an account is pictures of cats and "I'm a healthcare worker" memes, from which I deduce she PROBABLY does not have time to plan litters of kittens rn.

  • Planning a litter this spring but now lives in Uppsala, Sweden (and I guess Turku part time but they're in Sweden right now - since the pandemic perhaps?). AHAHHAHA no. The last thing anybody from Finland should do now is go to Sweden.

  • In Turku but nothing about plans for litters and their last litter was born at the end of 2020, so seems unlikely - they don't have that many cats. Bonus points for the gothest cattery website I've seen outside Norwegian Forest Cats though.

  • One from Turku doesn't seem to have a FB, just an email address listed on organization websites, but she appears in the newsletter as a breeder of new cats of the year as recently as 2019 so maybe?

  • One Turku breeder evidently, from fb, sent their last litter to new homes in January, so probably not planning anything soon but at least they're still kicking.

  • One Turku breeder (and several from the Hki area or elsewhere) has only a closed and private fb group (/profile) so who knows.

  • Another breeder about 2½ hrs away apparently expecting kittens next month (ie March 2021) but I'm not confident in Wax being willing to go that far even if they are going to sell any of them.

  • A Helsinki breeder who had litters last month and another who had a litter but in Oulu because the mother lives with a foster family.

Wax and I aren't coping with this emotionally exactly the same, but I find focusing on something I have to research to be a good distraction from, otherwise, getting sad again frequently. And I'm worried about Snookums. He is noticeably a bit more clingy now.
