1. omg, miami vice was so shiny and fabulous. the chinese woman is kickass and gorgeous and jamie and colin's smarmy-brothery-heterosexual-lifemates love is the best thing ever. now i want to see lots of shiny, slick videos. and stories about how their manly partnership is so pure and spiritually superior to any connection, however passionate, they could ever share with a mere accessory woman.

2. i have gradually been coming to the conclusion lately that i am significantly defective in the real-life social department. at first i was worried that i might just be like a harmless variety of sociopath, but we eventually determined that was unlikely. now i think i was either just completely undersocialised as a small child, or missing the gene that makes you crave social attachments and human interaction and cling to the bulwark of human society. it's another mark of how lame all the -ologists and -iatrists i've ever seen have been that, besides completely failing to grasp that i was suffering from anxiety at all even though i was regularly experiencing anxiety attacks "attacks of acute anxiety"¹, they never really got into that.


1. if nothing else i'll be forever grateful to the profession for the ologist who told me that i wasn't having anxiety attacks, i was just having attacks of acute anxiety. it's a great party anecdote and plus it still cracks me up after four years.

heartbreak... why? the end of the manga kind of leaves you hanging, but it's pretty happy, even if hikaru is personally depressed.

what? oh my god it was COMPLETELY heartbreaking. Hikaru being devastated because he couldn't live up to Sai's legacy!!!! KNOWING WHAT HE HAS TO DO AND SEEING IT CLEARLY BUT DOUBTING IF HE HAD THE STRENGTH TO DO IT. "Let's go, Shindou. It's not the end. It's never the end." OH MY GOD. :(((((((((((

hikaru is upset and angry with himself over the setback, but i don't think that particular amount of self-doubt is particularly tragic or anything more than to be expected. it doesn't hurt his determination to keep going towards the future; on the contrary, it strengthens it. i think it's clear from the scenes after he loses the match that he's doing all right at absorbing it. he has his purpose in life laid out for him more clearly than it ever has been before; his inner fire has been properly lit; and he has akira there with him in a perfect harmony of quiet understanding, already taking care of him.
