cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (Default)

the other day i decided to tag some entries from the first year i had this journal. it was engrossing - i'm pretty sure i found some of the first entries i ever made about [livejournal.com profile] wax_jism, for instance, in the first month we were chatting together, and excerpts from some of my first chats with [livejournal.com profile] hollsk. i also found this photo, taken in summer 2000. it survived as most of the images i posted back then didn't because it was hosted on [livejournal.com profile] kitten_head's webspace and not mine:

i'm on the left, followed by my cousins amanda, [livejournal.com profile] kitten_head, and kyndra. we were 18 and 17 when this was taken.

i haven't spoken to kyndra in over a year or amanda or [livejournal.com profile] kitten_head in about a month; i haven't seen any of my extended family since 2003. i miss them all a lot. sometimes i wonder if i will ever see them again.

in other news, i've watched the first three episodes of hikaru no go. i am happy to report that the slashiness started around the thirteenth minute of play, which isn't bad considering it's about twelve year olds. less happy to report that the style in which hikaru is drawn is irritatingly unpleasant for me to look at, but i suppose one can't have everything.

er, yeah. I agree (assuming you mean the character and not the entire show). It is sort of unfortunate. Touya, however, is generally adorable.

definitely the character and not the show. i like touya a lot, though. and sai, of course.

sometimes i wonder if i will ever see them again.

I often wonder the same thing about my paternal extended family. My dad doesn't live anywhere near the rest of his family, and rarely visits them, especially now that my grandmother died. The only times I'd see them would be when I went to Cleveland to see my grandma, but obviously I can't do that anymore.

when you are older you might be able to visit some of them directly? if you haven't entirely lost contact. i could do that, when i can afford to. they just live so far from my parents that it would be hard to see both in one trip to america.

I always thought Hikaru was cute. One thing I really liked about the manga (dunno if it's the same in the anime) is the way the characters aged so subtlely. By the end of the series, Hikaru and Akira look so grown up, but you don't really notice the change as it's happening. Very realistic. (In general, his drawing style is a lot more realistic than most manga and I really, really like it.)

It's definitely one of my favorite series, though.

i don't know if the manga and anime are similar or not, but i really wouldn't describe hikaru as realistically drawn in the anime - although i can see the cuteness, it's just kind of too round and bulgy for me.

Well, this (http://www.nipponcomics.com/wallpaper/hikaru2.jpg) is from much later in the series, but in general there's just a lot more detail and attention to anatomy. The eyes are still way big, of course, but it just doesn't look as cartoonish to me as most other anime and manga.

no, you're right - and god, that is gorgeous! it doesn't really look like that in the anime; it's much more cartoony, and baby hikaru (at least in eps 1-5) has almost perfectly round eyes:

Eek, yeah, he is. And he definitely doesn't look cute there. Kind of alienish...

He was definitely rounder and a bit more cartoony in the early volumes of the manga, both because of his younger age and because the artist's style improved over the course of the series, but nowhere near that bad.

The artists is also the same one who drew Death Note, though that's ended now, too. I hope whatever he starts next will be as good (he's not the author for either of these, just collaborating as the artist).

ahhh the year of our 'chats about crushes'. so cute. but now i have so so little time to chat. it is a bit sucky. and also you keep ending up in fandoms i don't know - SGA and Prince of Tennis! feh!

i get nostalgic for the days of LOTR and the RPS. (esp your RPS.)

and man - did Wax ever finish Void?

nah, she didn't. i have love for rps, i've just not been writing any of it. i mean, with rps you really don't have to know who the characters are, right? ;)

ah well it will remain a great classic.

write some!!! although i don't know who...

what i most want to read right now slashwise is:

  • jack bauer/tony almeida (rare! but why?)
  • john crichton/cameron mitchell weird narcissistic crossovers (have not actually looked for any of these yet)
  • vala mal doran/sam carter (there is some but tends to involve daniel jackson)
  • anything Firefly that doesn't involve Wash or Simon

LOTR just lent itself so so well to rps. nothing will be that good.

we stopped watching early in the season with claudia black, but i don't think we ever saw vala and sam actually interact. i don't know who #1 is - 24?

    man i can't believe you don't watch 24. it's so great.

and why did you stop watching stargate? vala is so great! she would be so easy to pair with anyone as she's just naughty. i need a Vala icon.

because sg-1 is really, really badly written. neither one of us could bear it after the first 6 weeks or so. i think wax watched 24 the first season or something, but i don't really like watching tv that much. there's a limited amount of watching i can keep up with on a week-to-week basis.
