new year's eve what was

wax's second friend (i say this because as of right now, she has two, and he is the more recent) went with us to pan's labyrinth last night (mission: take spanish last semester = SUCCESS, for there were no swedish subs, but i was totally okay) and then we went down to the river to watch a kind of cutely tiny, semi-podunk fireworks display with him and his new roommate, who happens to be a sort of-insane grumpy dude that wax also knew from work.
so it was crowded and incredibly noisy down both banks of the river, with most of the personal, do-it-yourself fireworks going off on the other side, which made for an okay view while we were waiting for the city's official display. there was only one incident directly behind us in the street where a firework exploded on the ground, emitting tons of smoke and sending other bystanders scrambling down the bank away from it. then we fled to a bar, which, when we got there, was bizarrely deserted. and it stayed bizarrely almost-deserted for a few hours. wax's terminally shy friend drank enough beer to loosen up, but also sadly enough to forget how to speak english. so we had some slightly surreal but surprisingly pleasant conversation with the grumpy one, a near-stranger whom wax had previously rather disliked.
