They're making a Nancy Drew movie and it looks kind of awful. It's contemporary, and she's moved to LA, and she's still dressed in 50s clothes.
There's also a PDA and a bomb in the semi-horrifying trailer, plus scenes of The Bitchy Girls in High School (she's in high school). I'm detecting a certain amount of copying from Veronica Mars, except I don't know that you could call it "cashing in on the phenomenon" when the Nancy Drew franchise has been way more successful than Veronica Mars has been of late...

Date: 23 Mar 2007 11:05 pm (UTC)I don't know if you know/remember (or even like Nancy Drew...), but there was even a series of "new" Nancy Drew YA novels in the 80s that were, you know, moved up and set in the 80s. They were a bit longer and "grittier" than the classic originals, and the period had changed a lot, but they'd actually kept the story almost completely the same: Nancy wasn't a bizarre slapstick spazz who little children make fun of; she wasn't a goody two-shoes obsessed with weirdly old-fashioned clothes; she didn't defuse bombs. That I remember. Although I um, do have one with UFOs.
Now I feel like re-reading a Nancy Drew book...
