Elizabeth Cady Stanton once famously said:

"Shall American statesmen . . . make their wives and mothers the political inferiors of unlettered and unwashed ditch-diggers [and] boot-blacks . . . fresh from the slave plantations of the South . . .?" (source)

Oddly enough, I never really expected to see that argument again.

The moral of today's story is: never underestimate SGA fandom. Or possibly don't read [livejournal.com profile] metafandom without emergency chocolate to hand.

Srsly. "[In my personal and unscientific and obviously biased opinion] Sexism is WORSE than racism, so therefore it's offensive to speak out against racism!"

Uh... oh... kay?

And thank you. ;)

Ah. AHAHAHAHA. As a woman and a person of colour, does this mean I'm ZOMG OPPRESSING MYSELF?

wow. ho hum. i guess, at least, i get to shoot myself when the revolution comes.

Maybe, because as a woman of colour you were doing her laundry (cooking her food, working her fields...) and not digging her ditches, she's okay with you! Or something.

To be fair, the author of the post admits that she's just whining. Not to say the messages aren't important, or skewed, etc.

But she was letting off steam.

I'm sure she might have expressed herself more felicitously if she'd waited until she cooled off, and I'm relieved; but I still am in no way okay with the "shut up" message or the complete logical disconnect between it and her argument. Her point about hidden misogyny in fanfic is totally valid - but there's just no good way to interpret the way she attempted to apply it to the racism debate.

A lot of people who mean well are saying really unfortunate things in this whole affair. :/

A lot people she's telling to shut the fuck up are also letting off steam. It's the same problem as the first comment that started all of this--there's a valid point being clouded by the anger.

Oh no, I totally agree, I was just pointing out her own words.
