When wax and I were walking home from dinner at eleven last night we saw a poster for Värttinä (one of my most-digged groups) playing live at Klubi on Humlegårdsgatan just a few blocks away that night. But it had gotten really cold out and there wasn't a time on the poster, and never having been to a club gig, I wasn't sure what it would be like or if they'd have already started yet or if the crowds would be loathesome, and wax was tired and discouraging, so we didn't go, but I already regretted it bitterly by the time we'd walked four blocks towards home. Hopefully they'll be back sometime. (There was a poster from the same bar that said Zen Café were there earlier in the week, though, so I'm guessing it's not that hard to find a gig to go to if you feel like it, albeit usually not one as exciting as Värttinä.) (When I was here in 2003 I missed a live Gjallarhorn show by like, three days, too.)

Wah. I can't handle club gigs. All that noise and smoke. And the thronging people. And when it's over everyone tries to get out at the same time and the crowds get even worse, and I usually end up having a panic attack because I'm stuck in the middle of it.

Well, I don't care all that much about live music, and never had the opportunity to see a club gig of music I would have already liked previously. But Finland is like so tiny that it's all completely different, and even though Åbo is the size of my hometown which was too lame to ever get any real concerts of anyone, it's like the fifth biggest urban area in the country. And most Finnish bands probably don't get a lot of play outside of it what with language issues. But I don't mind anonymous crows for short periods of time, or noise, or smoke, really, although it's not my favourite thing. Clubs aren't as horrific as, say, a party, to me. At least it's anonymous and kind of dark.

my niece and two of her friends choreographed and performed a dance for a school event once to a Värttinä song that was on a world music compilation they had. it was actually pretty excellent. ♥
