Yesterday when we were at the corner store with anglepoiselamp and lexandros (that's the same corner store, now that they live across the street!), a naked child - a fairly large one, about chest-high - appeared practically out of nowhere and began to peruse the rack of Donald Duck comics behind Sugar. (Naked except for shoes, that is. The undergarments were definitely missing. "What happened to 'No shoes, no shirt, no service'?" I said to wax. "It didn't want service," wax pointed out, "it just wanted to look at comic books. Besides, it was wearing shoes.")

It was very much a blink-and-triple-take situation. "There's a naked child behind you," said wax to Sugar, who apparently filtered the remark entirely out of her conscious brain; one can only presume it got stuck on the Surreality Filter. So she missed that exciting event even though it was right behind her.

It's not like a naked child could just... trip in off the beach or anything here. We live in the three-story-building area of town, two blocks from the city concert hall and the main bus station. It's definitely an urban environment. So where did it come from? The world may never know.

This post amuses me far too much. Mostly because I think of how funny it would be if the bad ass misbehaving children that came into my shop were suddenly naked. I would run screaming into the back office, "My eyes!"

We were just laughing a lot. As were all the people around us. You couldn't see the child's head as it walked around, but you could track it by the drifts of muffled chuckling.
