Ha, I saw that article. Apu as racist stereotype hits more nerves n the UK than it might elsewhere because we, unfortunately, have a nasty history of 'bud bud ding ding' Indian/Pakistani stereotypes. It's probably not as loaded in the US.

I doubt Matt Groening would have toned it down if he thought something was likely to be more offensive, though. That's about 100% of the Simpsons. Just because a lot of Americans don't even recognise that particular stereotype doesn't mean he's not fully aware of its context.
