Wax's #1 Friend V (this is order of, like, making friends - chronological - not order of precedence) just made her get a facebook, and she did it because she's only got 2 friends and she can't afford to be dissing their attempts to keep virtual contact, especially when they switched jobs and got a girlfriend and anyway.

Oh my God, Facebook is making my skin (and Wax's skin) crawl. It's so fucking... normative. Just. Normative. Why would you want to do that? "Blah blah blah is In a Relationship with First Name Last Name"! That's not even touching the "Stories". Or the fucking interface, for the love of little green boxes with lids. Get this site away from me!

Of course, I explicitly want to have as little contact with the people who keep up via Facebook - like, my high school friends - as possible. Thanks to the miracle of the internet, I'm able to interact only with people inside fandom, pretty much, and I've taken full advantage of that. (The one person who made me swear up and down to email her so that we could catch up at our friend's wedding never answered the email - that was a relief.)

I keep getting invites to myspace and facebook. Upon receiving them, I lose that friend's number.

I got a Facebook the other day, just to see what it was like. It was like hell on Earth and I'm not touching it voluntarily ever again. Except I keep feeling inadequate because now I have this locked profile that has basically nothing in it and I feel like I should do whatever I can to make it pretty and exciting.

Says a girl whose LJ layout is stuck in the limbo of three fandoms ago (or so). HA HA.

The nice thing about facebook is that now it can be hideously customized -- I keep mine pleasantly customized. But, with customization comes application for SGO (if you don't want to just stick to 'interested in men or women'), a multi-relationship app, and all sorts of crazy shit.

Okay, for once I'm gonna be that ignorant heteronormative girl who demands that the minority culture educate her about her deficiencies. What's so shudder-inducing about "Blah blah blah is In a Relationship with First Name Last Name"? Is it the fact that it assumes that a step up from "relationship" is "marriage", that it only allows you to list monogamous relationships as serious ones, or something else entirely?

And while I agree that Facebook is boring, what's so bad about the interface? I am totally confused.

Facebook is a tool for irritating your acquaintances. It's like everything I hate about LJ dialed up to 100.

It has one, and only one, valid use: playing online Scrabble. Yep, I caved and got a Facebook just so I could do that with various RL friends who had Facebooks.

PS: I'm winning.

Facebook. Why? Well... I got one very recently, and within days I've managed to have conversations with two of my older cousins who I nowadays usually only see once a year. We all hate e-mail and telephones, and since they are people with jobs and kids, I can't just hop on a train a show up at their doorstep whenever I feel like it. Also, I'm once again talking to a girl I used to be really close with before we got into a stupid, stupid fight a couple of years ago. We had a pretty great high school and for the most part people liked each other, so is it silly for maybe eventually wanting to get together with those people?

I think for most Facebook is just a tool for recreating a link of sorts to people they have lost contact with, and are actually sorry for that having happened. It's not for fandom or being creative. I personally think of Facebook as a kind of semi-public phone book or an address book.

Facebook is dead ugly, though. ;)
