cimorene: closeup of a large book held in a woman's hands as she flips through it (reading)

I've kinda been neglecting my recs page because it's so gargantuan and, in its current incarnation, useless. See, I used to use it as a source of bookmarks for myself, before social bookmarking or tags existed, and doing it manually was the best way. It was a more inclusive list than the things I'd include in it nowadays - more like delicious, where I bookmark things if I enjoy them and want to reread them even if they're badfic, usually. (Not quite that permissive.)

So I have this recs page made up of categorised and alphabetised links, hundreds of them, some of them entered seven years ago and many of them broken; and now I have delicious for organising actual bookmarks in a much more convenient way, leaving the recs page, in theory, only for actual recs that I'd have something to say about.

I decided I wanted to clean my recs page up, transferring its contents to delicious and then making a new, more abbreviated one from its, er, ashes. But I didn't count on how time-consuming that would be: I didn't used to record the lengths of what I read, not to mention that I don't remember most of these stories so I have to copy the comments from my recs page for delicious. Each story is a minimum of four clicks, plus all the typing to put in the tags. I started at the first fandom page at my site - due South - and I've only entered 26 and am already tired of it. I guess it'll be an ongoing project.

Yeah, I'm going through and adding all my old recs and reviews to delicious, too, and it's slow as hell. I also didn't used to note the length, which is now an essential part of my categorisation scheme (at least I have a word count extension for Firefox, but it's still a pain). I also didn't used to put summaries with my reviews, so I'm having to add those in, too. Older reviews are also lacking the rating. ;_;

I really should make an effort to do at least one LJ entry of reviews per day (generally around 4 fics per post), but of course I don't, and I let weeks go by inbetween spurts of adding stuff. Suck.

I love reading your reviews because nobody else writes reviews like that, even if sometimes I like a story better, usually because of differing kinks or tolerance levels for particular bits of badness. I'm amazed at your tenacity, too: I read a lot of badfic, but I usually don't read all the way through that much mediocrefic and pay attention to the point where I could write a review.

Sometimes I wish I could give up on a fic more easily! But usually I only give up if the fic is really long and obviously not to my taste or bad. If it's short, I figure I can see it through no matter what. It's kind of OCD, though, like when I used to force myself to finish book series even if I didn't like them. (I read a six volume Melanie Rawn series even though I hated it after like the second or third book. But I'd started it, so I was damn well going to finish! XD)

Ahahhh, I know what you mean. We all have different compulsions, I guess. I have to get through a whole archive if I start but I don't have to read all the stories, for example - I just have to check to make sure whether I would want to, and read all the ones I would want to read.

Hee. And I can't do archives or comms at all. I'll get frustrated and give up after looking at like one page worth of fics. I just don't have the patience to scroll through stuff looking for something decent.

I transferred all my SPN recs to del.icio.us last year some time... I had roughly 300, at the time. It took about a week, all told spending an hour or two every evening and then the better part of a Saturday, and that was with relatively recent links for which I already had word counts. I'm glad I did, in that it's made my life infinitely easier reccing wise, but it was definitely a project.

Yeah, well... actually that's reassuring! That time investment isn't as bad as I'd thought. And I definitely want to get it done...
