That sounds like a pretty standard "I am suuuuuch a woobie! You have to let me out/feed me because I am such a pietious little kitteh!" meow.

She never *does* goes out, does she?

No, although she did years ago when she was a kitten. She had a renewed taste of freedom a few weeks ago when we took her on vacation, in the cat carrier, of course. This meow is special for the Crazy because she's extremely talkative, but this isn't what she usually says. She's not a moaner usually. She tends to be more emphatic and high-pitched.

It's possible the vacation whetted her appetite for wild adventure, so she's trying the extra-plaintive wail. I've heard it from all the cats I've had, but not too often -- generally it's for fresh fish or some other *desperate* need.

This isn't the height of her prowess, though, oh no. Every now and then she produces this ghostly soul-in-torment moan, deep-voiced and hoarse and rather resonant. I haven't caught it on tape yet, though. ;)

Her usual complaining voice, ie because she doesn't want to be picked up, is more of an "Aw, maaaaaaaaaaaaaan" kind of tone, or even a "HEY!!!", whereas this basic moan is much more piteous, for sure. Although I think you're right, she's also been known to use it when hungry or thirsty.

The horrible soul-in-torment moan is used around here for a mix of fear and anger, with anger winning: like when the neighbor's cat showed up, and Sneakers treed him and sat under the tree, wailing "come down and be my dinner!"
