cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (can he type?)

It's been a long time since any discussion made me as furiously angry as the comments in this post.

In case you're worried about your blood pressure, let me summarise the argument in advance:

Silly little women, SGA is about boys! If you wanted women to be treated with equal screentime/writing/dignity/quantity, you just came to the wrong show! Take your mean feminist critique out to the real world and quit harshing our blinkered homosocial squee! Also, more men have died on SGA than the total number of women who ever appeared in more than one episode, so it's totally not sexist at all!

RAGE.

Oh, GOD. This is why all my comments about SPN and race have been under flock. I HATE HATE HATE the "that's not what MY BEAUTIFUL SHOW is about, you silly feminist! Why do you overlay your icky politics onto my innocent fun?" shit. SG:A and SPN do women and race poorly. For some of us, who notice that the world does women and race poorly, and are upset by that, this is also upsetting to us in our shows. So we stop watching them, and we are angry, because we used to like them until they fucked up at portraying humans in an equally human light. WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND, FANDOM?!

GAH.

It's bad enough when people dismiss or become belligerent when they get the critique directly, as in when someone tries to bring up a racist or sexist issue in a piece of fanfiction. But when you're dealing with something like this, with people who simply are having serious discussions in public about deeply painful, personal issues that are not only important to a huge percentage of fandom but (RACISM AND SEXISM) responsible, right now, as we speak, for, like - genocide and death and torture and things... why are these discussions attacked? Why is it so dangerous that you can't even just skip it if you don't want your squee harshed, that you have to approach the discussion and censure people for daring to voice their concerns in public and discuss them with each other? How dare you belittle these issues, and the personal pain and suffering of the people involved and the billions of other people around the world, by saying that some people will just "see oppression everywhere"? It's simply revolting.
