Though Captain Hastings seems quite different if you read the Poirot books than he does on tv and I prefer the tv interpretation of him, in some ways the books, often less playful and cute, are more slashy. Poirot's eyes change colour with emotion (specifically they get greener the smarter he's being), and Hastings frequently starts to feel indignant and then - I paraphrase - says that he can't stay mad at Poirot because he's so cute and/or lovable and/or affectionate. In the short story about the robbery at the Grand Metropolitan, the story is framed by them each springing for a joint vacation.
