book purchase! at LAST
24 Aug 2008 04:30 pmI've been really pissed at Akademiska Bokhandeln because every fucking time I've gone in there recently, they don't have anything I want. They were completely sold out of Sherlock Holmes books for months and didn't get any more; they had run out of new Heyers and, even though Heyers have been going off their shelves at a steady rate since they started stocking the new Arrow editions over a year ago, they haven't gotten any more in; they previously had stocked a few of Zelazny's Amber novels, but they never had the first one in the series, and the same with Lois McMaster Bujold's current saga; and they keep selling out of DWJ's The Game, The Pinhoe Egg and Conrad's Fate and then restocking them without stocking any of her 20 million other books that have recently been reprinted, or getting in a single copy of her new book. I was about ready for a boycott, but I went in to please Wax today and managed to come out with

Yay! I don't have paper copies of Holmes of my own, and I've been coveting this edition, from Penguin classics, since I first saw them. They didn't have Scarlet or Adventures ("Should we stock the first one in THIS series, boss?" "No! I don't think people who read in English like to read the first book in a series"), so I kinda just picked this one at random. And I've been meaning to pick up The Luxe once I could get my hands on it.

Date: 1 Sep 2008 02:18 am (UTC)As for what I thought of it, well, I thought it was
1. Pretty engrossing
2. Not badly-written
3. Definitely YA-feeling in emo relationship drama levels, the characters' outlook, and the sophistication of the language
4. So much like Gossip Girl that it possibly *was* actually ripped off
5. Severely lacking in real period flavour, feel, details, and dialogue
6. Less irritating than it could have been
7. Plotwise, totally transparent. Whatever you do, don't read it for the plot.
But like I said, I came away willing to buy the next one, so...

It's actually a pleasure to be able to hook people up with stuff they want to read - I'm forever trying to pass out all the freebies I get. I have a couple of other duplicates too. Um.. the new Marcus Sedgwick, 'Kiss of Death'? New Kevin Crossey-Holland, 'Waterslain Angels' or Sarah Dessen, 'The Truth About Forever'. Let me know if you fancy any, I can pop them in too! xxx
