9 Sep 2008 06:19 pmI'm almost in love with these red suede boots by Chinese Laundry, but I just can't get over the tacky/gross early 90s shape, with that hideous elevated arch and huge lumpy pointed toe, which is only worsened by the shape of the heel. Here's how to sculpt a suede slouch boot, guys: grey knee-highs at New Look, though they're still emitting a whiff of 90s. What shapes do I prefer? Equestrian or Doc Martens-looking or else ridged and flared like the insulated winter boots sold in Finland by Ten Points and Gimme5.
ETA: on a related note, the new Marc Jacobs collection for SS09 at New York Fashion Week. WOW! There's a fantastic mixture of traditional 30s/40s shapes - sash waists and pencil skirts - with varied fabrics and menswear tailoring combined with flounces. Bright candy colours, leathers and metallics, tweed/pinstripe accents while checks/plaid are everywhere (skirt, blouse, sash, waistcoat). Kimono and bolero styling is still around (plus a fantastic contrast-tie obi sash), as are gladiators (including some bright red ones). Palette is mustard and plum and black, with cream and white, red, browns, and bold coloured accents (like a crayola-green leather pencil skirt, wow). Period-reminiscent garden party florals mix with playful colourblock patterns and chunky vintage-looking accessories. More pictures here, here, and here.

Date: 9 Sep 2008 09:34 pm (UTC)I think next time I need to buy shoes (which, oh god, was actually LAST MONTH, and I still haven't done it because I hate shopping for shoes so very much), I will just send you a pathetic email begging you to tell me what to buy.
