annoying tasks 101
29 Sep 2008 12:32 pmEvery time I reinstall my OS, I forget to back up /home and lose all my preferences including my Gimp curves presets and my Amarok playlists. *grouch* I've uploaded tracklistings for several of my favourites, over the years, under the tag mixtapes (I use this for short playlists with predetermined order as opposed to 'playlists' for big bundles of music meant to be listened to on shuffle), so it's possible to remake a small handful of them, but I tend to make at least one new playlist each month and I've lost, I think, five or six each time I've upgraded.

Date: 29 Sep 2008 03:46 pm (UTC)Actually, I have already fucked up: guess where my second hard drive is mounted?
Yep, /home. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
I'm going to have to remember how to unmount it and mount it back in /mnt where I should have put it (I edited /etc/fstab, so I'll need to change that) and *then* mount /home there, and *then* move the various directories already on the drive into /home.

Date: 29 Sep 2008 04:00 pm (UTC)I've had reinstalls 4 times now and only one of those times did I have my settings. That was because Brother Linux did the whole thing for me, including creating an entirely new partition that he named "old home". I could've kept that for backups forever except we had to reformat again...
