  • Right now what I want more than anything is one of those beanbags that you heat in the microwave and drape around your neck. My neck has been so stiff in the last few weeks that these little stabbing arrows of twingey numbness go up my spine to my scalp and down my spine almost to to the small of my back rather frequently when I turn my head or even just stand up. The sorts of neck stretches and shoulder stretches that I do do several times a day don't seem to work, possibly cause I'm doin it rong or just because I don't do it enough. I'd buy one tomorrow if I knew where you COULD buy them. I haven't been able to find any electric heating pads either, here, only hot water bottles (how... 1970s) and electric blankets (how... 'let's burn down the house okay'). Some variation of sisu? A revenant of the fact that Finland, despite the greatest cell phone penetration in the world, is only about 65 years past its industrial revolution?

  • We were chatting in the car with Brother Windows's wife and she remarked that only the eldest child is under the delusion growing up that they are an adult. There's a ring of profound truth there...

  • A while ago I was thinking I should go back and cap the scenes I haven't before from Singin' in the Rain, and then I thought, okay well, which ones are those? And then I realised all the ones I was thinking of... actually weren't from the movie at all but from the fanfic I wrote six years ago.

  • I saw a woman walk by on the street at midnight carrying either a violin or a machine gun. But considering we live close to the symphony hall, it was probably a violin.

Here's what you do. Take a long sock (clean, of course) and pour in a judicious amount of uncooked rice or hard beans (pinto beans work well), plus either loose tea (mint or chamomile is nice) or dry lavender if you happen to have any laying around. Tie a knot in the end of the sock. Microwave for two minutes. Voila! Instant beanbag!

Oh! I forgot to mention--the sock should be cotton or wool. Poly blend is not so gret in the microwave.

Really, any long cloth tube will work--the sleeve off of a discarded shirt, maybe!

I always advocate that others be craftier than I would ever be :)

Poor Cim! I concur with [livejournal.com profile] aynatonal's advice to make a microwavable bag of rice, it should take you all of about five minutes, maybe ten if you have to sew the bag from scratch! Also -- I am totally in love with electric blankets! Believe it or not, I had to turn mine on last night (November in Australia!) because we got hit by a surprise cold front and I'd been sitting on my ass all day studying and therefore had feet of ice.

[livejournal.com profile] aynatonal-- Wow, that's a gorgeous icon!

I'll break out the sewing machine the day after tomorrow, I guess. Today I must do DISHES and vaccuum to get ready for our one-day-late Thanksgiving dinner! And I've been batting around Yuletide ideas in my head.

Sometimes I definitely want an electric blanket when I'm in my chair or on the couch! But I've never yet been cold with the down blanket...

Would you hate me if I said I have a wheat bag on my bad knee right now? So easy to make, though, it's just a cloth bag full of wheat.

I love your Singin' in the Rain fanfic, to me it is canon.

Thank you! I definitely like to imagine it happened something like that. It's hard to look at anything I wrote such a long time ago anymore, though, it's always a bit jarring as my style changes and I notice more and more things I would rewrite.

Is there somewhere you know that sells pulses and whole grains? Coz you just need a packet of hard wheat, some fabric and a means to sew it up. (I got heaps of 'em!)

I don't now. But I did when I was a child. However, I don't think the point is necessarily about the child's conscious relationship with the idea of adulthood, anyway, but about its perception of itself and other people, its responsibilities, etc.
