new sneakers

And I will love them and squeeze them and call them George. There was an amusing/embarrassing thing in the store because their US>European sizing chart was wrong. I was like, "Um, 39/40 European and 8.5/9 US women's..." and the shop girl was like, "No, see, you must want a SEVEN," and I was like, um, no, I really don't want a seven, I know what size shoes I wear and have worn for ten years, but she brought out six and a halfs and sevens and then came back with eights before she finally fetched the nines that I originally asked for. Then I was like, "Look, I know what's wrong with your sizing chart - these are actually boys' sizes that you've listed here. See how it says 40 = 7 on both sides? But men's and women's US sizes aren't the same." She was oblivious, though. "No, these are women's sizes." Except for how they AREN'T. And I tried one more time with "Actually in America men's and women's sizes are staggered - the men's are bigger," and she was like, "Hahaha, these charts aren't just for Vans." It's not Vans! It's YOU! But then I gave up. Oh well.

She was really nice, though, and totally made me feel positive about my shopping experience and want to go there again. I've been craving these shoes since I first saw them in a window a few weeks ago, but was nervous of buying them in the snobby little scenekid boutique. So I was delighted that they had them in my favourite department store.

Hahah, I love how people here are so insistent that they know everything about English and english-ness.

It's really cute when they just keep pronouncing something wrong. Wax can't get her head around "long-winded" being like the wind in the trees and not like a winding road. Our friend Sugar always pronounces the "k" in knitting.
