cimoreneI can see why the Moomins are so popular in Japan. They're full of crack and things like random elephants/mummies/sentient inanimate objects, without a lot of plot. Moomin Mama is pretty hardcore and reminds me strongly of Wax's mom ("Good thing I always carry [insert odd yet useful item] in my purse!"). Sadly, my mom and I are both more of the Snorkfröken type ("Ooh, shiny!").
Although my mom is strangely accomplished at everything (gourmet cooking, sewing, weaving, painting, sculpture, many kinds of pottery, carpentry, building houses, renovating houses, restoring antiques, wood carving, plumbing, fixing cars, electrical wiring, stained glass, laying stone walkways, gardening, cleaning, camping, jewelry making - painting bookshelves purple and cutting them in half and turning them upside down and putting the microwave on them, if necessary - possibly the only thing she can't do is be organised. Oh yes, or hold up under pressure) (as you can see I still suffer slightly from a feeling of inferiority). Right, so, that is somewhat like Moomin Mama (although more so), but she lacks Moomin Mama's unflappability, adaptability, and matter-of-fact quick coping. Also, she would never say "You just need some work to do!" (very Wax's Mom) when appealed to for comfort - she would probably say "Read a book and have some chocolate, poor baby" or "Oh, do you want to come garage saling with me?" or "How about we skip ___ and go shopping in ___?"
As for the Moomins, people keep asking me if they're taking drugs yet. No, not in this volume! Pirates, elephants, swindlers and millionaires, and plenty of whiskey and rum, but no illegal substances as yet, not even pot. Snusmumriken has his pipe at all times, of course, but one does assume that it contains tobacco.
