the surfing vacation story subgenre

some pictures of surfing the other day made me nostalgic for those surfing vacation stories, and my audience happened to be unfamiliar with the genre. it wasn't something i'd thought about before then, but now that i have i'm pretty sure it is a subgenre invented in lotr rps fandom (and something that fandom should be really proud of!). i proposed this idea to wax and she said it sounded correct to her too - which actually probably means fandom as a whole owes the genre to ukcalico, whose first stories in the blood orange universe were posted very early, like in the first couple of months of 2002, if i remember right. that wasn't really going anywhere, just - i love surfing vacation stories. thank you, lotr rps. and thank you, cal.

obviously, the ohmiya of the day has been supplanted by jun/aiba of the day. *_*

Jun really. XD He is such a poser. And by that I don't mean, you know, faker, I just mean he poses way too much!

daniel jackson would like to do an anthropological study of jun and his posing, and how they came about, what they mean in the "the body language of jun" etc etc etc. perhaps it's really from ALIENS.

i'd be very surprised if some anthropologist (or psychologist or sociologist or linguist) somewhere had not already done such a study. although, granted, not of jun specifically. maybe aiba could be the psycholinguist who--

so aiba the psycholinguist takes jun's invitation to surf as an opportunity to further his study! and jun doesn't know he's being studied as a, you know, an actual study, but he definitely knows that aiba watches him a lot, and aiba's gorgeous and cute, so jun definitely doesn't mind, and perhaps then there is hijinks with aiba trying not to be found out, because you know, the observing changes the nature of the thing being observed, etc etc--and hijinks when jun finds out, thinking that all this time they've been dating! (though jun, of course, was not thinking they were dating exclusively.)

although it's not like aiba could think jun intended to be studied exactly, but he has no reason to assume it's like a date or anything, it's not like jun invited him out to dinner at a nice restaurant. like, they ate, but it wasn't a nice restaurant and it was totally because they were tired and hungry after they surfed! and jun paid because aiba is an airhead and was still fumbling around trying to find his wallet.

when i showed these to perhael she said something like "he has posing down to an art form". although possibly posing was an art form already, in which case jun just raised the standards a lot. it's like posing was a pidgin before jun, and he made it into a creole.
