Although they are extremely hilarious, and their universe/premise is both fairly unique and really cool, there are several problems with these books that I can't get past, to wit:

  1. Sookie is such a goddamned Mary Sue that I keep expecting her to get sorted into Sparklypoo

  2. Skanky gender issues

  3. Unintentionally funny and kind of boring genre-formulaic Supernatural Romance smut, although at least there was not as much of it as in the first book

  4. The eye-buggingly ouch descriptions of what people are wearing

  5. A bizarrely small quantity of non-white people considering the setting, which is thankfully not reflected in True Blood

But on the other hand, the books are very funny, and they do offer:

  1. Eric

  2. Bubba

  3. Eric

  4. Bill/Sookie/Eric (not really, but at least they make it easier to drift away thinking about it, alright? It could happen later, but they don't really seem like the onscreen-threesome kind of book)

  5. Eric

And it's not even just that she's [Harris] Southern, it's that she's like, Southern, and old, and VERY DOWDY. Seriously, her descriptions of self-described sexy and classy things - WHAT.

LOL, I have a friend that likes her, I believe. She does fanart? I had no idea who Sookie Stackhouse was, though.

I was willing to forgive her for kinda liking Twilight and some other twee stuff, but now I'm starting to think she actually has bad taste. Not that I don't love her, 'cause she rocks.

#1, YES. "UGH, I am so unattractive, with my long blonde hair, big breasts and deep tan!" Noooo, you are unattractive because you are AN IDIOT.

Also, Eric is awesome.

"It's so tragically ironic and dry the way everyone loves me, I am smarter and cooler than everyone else yet have poor self-esteem, and all the vampires want me to give them rifle-hunting lessons. Also, whenever I run into another Tremendously Hot Hunk, he mysteriously wants to sleep with me, tee-hee!"

Ah, the reason why I love the books so. :) And of course, Eric. I gave up on True Blood, too much Jason. Bleargh.

Pam/Sookie/Eric would make me sooooo happy. But then, I've only seen the TV show and I'm a little ambivalent about it.

Pam! Yes! She is one of my favorites. And Eric. However, I do not think the lack of POCs is at all weird, from what I know of North Luzianna.

There are a lot of black people living in Louisiana. A lot less post-Katrina, of course, and their geographical distribution's not random or anything, but I still find it odd. There's only like... one black character worth mentioning in Bon Temps from the first three books, and that's an extremely small proportion.

See, my first and major problem is the name "Sookie". I am pretty sure I cannot get past that.

Maybe if I search and replace ;)

Seriously, it is a dumb name omg.

I don't think it's an unrealistic name or one that would be seen as odd within her culture, so however odd it sounds to the rest of us...

This is true. But to Aussies of my age, if someone was being a big cry-baby you'd describe them as 'sooky' or a 'sook', so it will forever be married to that in my head.
