Date: 28 Dec 2009 03:12 pm (UTC)The Future of Fandom wants these boots, but she wants them in black. They are not available (anywhere in the world or internet) in black in her size. Should she get the less-cool dark brown ones? Do you with your learnings know of any similar beasts that *are* available? She has wide feet, you see. Also, they shouldn't come too far up her calves, because she has wide calves. And they should not be uncool. Oh! and she will be wearing them in Paris, so they should not trumpet "I am a clueless American, mock and shun me!"

Date: 28 Dec 2009 04:47 pm (UTC)As for the style, that is not hard - I wouldn't recommend the dark brown ones unless she has tons of brown or tan clothing OR doesn't care at all about wearing brown and black together. I know that I once succumbed to brown instead of black boots out of desperation, and they were a thorn in my side for years. Every time I needed to wear boots with my black pants or black coats or black jackets or black cardigans, I agonized on whether to leave the boots or the jacket out, or actually commit the faux pas, or redesign the outfit to look like the combination of black and brown was on purpose. (If she doesn't care about combining brown and black, that has plenty of support too! Not in the area of the country where I grew up, but I've heard stylish and knowledgeable people say as much, so.)
Those boots are a type of English riding boots similar to the Chelsea boots which were made world-popular by the Beatles, as I understand it, so they should not incur mockery in Europe. They're also a timeless and classic wardrobe staple, so they should be just as appropriate to wear in decades to come as they are now. It *should* be possible to find some quite similar pairs elsewhere, but they may not be as comfortable. Easy Spirit is known for comfort, of course.
Finding more of these without the elastic sides from Chelsea boots is a little harder. I didn't find much of anything in Zappos, which is a very large site searchable with many different criteria. Amazon allows some similar filtering, so you might try there, to see if she can find something that she likes.
From my looking around, it seems these Rockports may be the closest. Kenneth Cole has some similar ones.
