Last night I watched the most recent episode of Inspector Lewis, 4x04 "Falling Darkness", and it took a decided turn for the crack. This is more crack than in 2x03 "Life Born of Fire", by the way, in which Hathaway's childhood friend committed suicide because after being brainwashed by a Christian converting-the-gays group, he convinced his boyfriend to get a sex change operation in Brazil, which accidentally rendered them sexually incompatible, and so his forced-to-become-an-mtf boyfriend went around killing everyone xie considered morally responsible for his death.

So "Falling Darkness" is focused on Laura Hobson, the hot Swedish-looking coroner who's been friends with Lewis ever since the episode where she was first introduced, 1995 Morse special "The Way Through the Woods" (in which Lewis's ~loyalties were very briefly tested by being loaned to a douchey redheaded CI who hated Morse and insisted on calling Lewis "Bob" instead of "Robbie").

"Falling Darkness" is obviously the result of the following conversation somewhere at ITV headquarters:

"How can we bring the focus of this episode to Dr Hobson while also filming in an abandoned insane asylum much like the set of the music video 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' and dealing with psychics, vampires, and twins separated at birth?"

"How about if Dr Hobson is being stalked by a pair of adopted fraternal twins separated at birth who accidentally married each other and who mistakenly believe she is their birth mother, because they are angry about having been born with a fatal birth defect?"

"But how do they come to the impression she is their mother when she's not?"

"Well, there could be a complex interpersonal drama at college, so that the real mother is angry with her, because naturally her response to said anger would be to enroll in the secret hospital under Dr Hobson's name. I'm sure that people enrolled at hospital under false names with impunity all the time. It was the 80s."

Anyway, one is forcibly reminded that ITV are also the makers of that episode of Marple that answered the question,

"How can we inject more evil lesbian nuns into Agatha Christie?"

That was a very silly episode.
