Nesting

Wax and I have been wanting to move out of this place and into a different one that is (a) bigger, (b) 2-bedroom, and (c) a house, for a long time. But this has been intensified lately because:

  • Wax discovered that Finland gives a tax credit to first-time home purchasers below the age of 40, and she thinks that 36 is dangerously close to 40

  • Wax's granny died and Wax lusted impractically after her house, which is larger/more centrally located/too much in need of fixing for our needs

  • We inherited furniture from Wax's granny that brings the total furniture in our flat higher than what it can comfortably hold without things blocking and obstructing other things.

We can't move because we're both currently unemployed and all, but also because:

  • Until the sale of Granny's house goes through we don't have Wax's share of the inheritance. Also,

  • Perry is almost 15 and suffers from Cushing's disease, and even though it's being treated, he pees on the floor a lot; his best case scenario pee-interval is <4 hours. Our current flat is just poured cement and vinyl sheeting on the floor, but most places are more easily ruined by that sort of thing. Of course, there are potential solutions, diapers and things like that, but we haven't arranged one. Until recently our hope was that the medication would fix it. Besides which it's not clear whether a supply of disposable diapers would be affordable in our current economic situation (seems unlikely).

However, it's springtime, and the burst of solar power combined with my powerful nesting urge has resulted in organizing all the closets and storage-related areas in the flat!

In the last week, I have emptied all the closets and cleaned all the shelves in the flat (minus our desk areas and the kitchen pantry because I already did those this year) except for one small cabinet above the coat closet! I've

  • thrown out four enormous garbage bags full of stuff!

  • been to Ikea twice for Storage Solutions (shoe boxes! crocheted baskets! picture frames! little green cardboard boxes with lids! spice jars! new bedroom curtains!)!

  • sorted out about 2 cubic feet of clothes to be given to charity!

  • and an equal quantity of non-functional electronics that have to be driven over to the special place for recycling of electronics because you can't put them in the trash!

Then today Wax repotted a lot of the plants in her ginormous possibly-carnivorous plant jungle which is slowly taking over the kitchen and livingroom. Also we talked about how a kitchen table is a waste of space when we never use it, at least if it doesn't fold up out of the way, but we didn't take an axe to it or anything. I just wished I could wave a magic wand and convert it to a folding card table or something, which would be much more useful.

I feel pretty great about all that, but I still want to move.

I am already feeling that space-too-small need-to-move feeling, and we just moved into this apartment less than a year ago!

Funny, as it seemed impossibly huge before we moved all of our stuff in.
