cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (sleek & stylish)

So, I wear neutral eye-shadow semi-regularly and it's the only eyeshadow I wear outside of special occasions (like 1-2x per year special). My current duo's big problem is that the lighter color is too glittery. I only like glittery for bright colors.

So what I want is an eyeshadow palette with at least 2, but no more than 4 warm neutrals that are all matte, and I have looked in 2 department stores, a specialty makeup store, and the enormous tax-free makeup section on the cruise ship to Stockholm with no real luck so far!

I don't actually want to pay high-end brand prices, but I looked at them anyway out of exasperation, and I didn't find what I was looking for from any of them. It seems like I may have to just buy matte singles and try to find a convenient way to carry them together, but they tend to be larger AND more expensive, which is a waste of both money and product since I use very little of it. :/

So I thought I'd ask just on the off chance that anyone has any recs. Via Twitter I just learned that Urban Decay has a new all-matte palette, but it's still more expensive than I want and bigger than I need.

Hard question!

Ha, I finally got logged in! Ahem:

LORAC
Small eye shadow palettes with all matte shades are, indeed, hard to find. I know that the LORAC PRO palette (which is way bigger than what you want) is fully 50% matte shades, so I started with that brand. They have a $38 PRO To Go small version that could suit your needs.

NYX
NYX also offers two 6-shade palettes that are in the right ballpark, and dirt cheap at $7.50. I was initially drawn to their "The Natural Shadow Palette", but the reviews it gets are just awful: no pigmentation to speak of, lousy texture, not even worth the $7.50 price tag. Much higher quality is their "The Adorable Shadow Palette", which only contains one glitter bomb. The light beige shade (3 from the left) is allegedly not 100% matte, but it seems non-glittery for all practical purposes in the review swatches.

Custom
If you want to say "Screw it!" and just make your own custom duo or quad, there are actually a lot of make-up brands that will sell you that. This is a pretty comprehensive list; most of the companies listed offer duos or quads:

Around 6 months ago, I decided I wanted to learn how to do real makeup like an adult. I've been following some beauty bloggers and the Makeup Addiction subreddit, splurging at Sephora, and swapping tips with 3 like-minded friends (including one who's 50 and really knows her stuff). It's enough background knowledge that I had a good idea where to start, which is most of the battle.

If you ever feel compelled to add a make-up blogger to your RSS reader, I strongly recommend "Brightest Bulb in the Box". She's a CHEMIST and she makes GRAPHS and generates P-VALUES :D

I got some nice matte ones from this etsy shop. A little shiny--they're made from minerals, but not terribly. They do require a little patience to work with as they are just minerals, nothing else. I got them a few years ago and the owner is on vacation so I'm not sure how much they are now, but I only paid $2.75 for them (which included shipping!).

Welcome! It isn't much that you get, but if only uses it a little (like you and I), it's worth I say (if only to avoid the crazy chemicals!).

Urban Decay has a "Naked Basics", $27 usd small all matte pallet that is great. I love the Naked 2, which has a number of the colors. It's all really good quality, but pricy.

Also, the "kitten" series by Stila, if you can get them in the matte is amazing.

I really like yaby cosmetics http://www.yabycosmetics.com/eyeshadow-refill/

I have one of their palettes (you buy the palette on the side and fill it at your own pace) but they're expensive (it was a gift), UNLIKE their products which I think are priced super nicely.

If you don't mind using an empty magnetic palette from another source or making your own, or gluing the pans in place instead, I think this could be a nice solution.

The eyeshadow pans are small, but I have found that for me it was the right size (and refills are so cheap!). They also don't say when a shade is matte but you can see it in the pictures. I have several of their neutral mattes and love them.
