cimorene: painting of a glowering woman pouring a thin stream of glowing green liquid from an enormous bowl (misanthropy)

I don't usually do this, but I was browsing my quotes-of-the-month posts from the past and stumbled on one I did for 2011 which was enlightening to look back on. So I decided to hit the memorable bits again here.

  • New To Me: I learned about the Oil Cleanse Method this year and tried it, and discovered it was great for my face, and completely failed to make a new night time routine around it because it's too time consuming. Maybe next year? Maybe if I don't do it at night (but you're not supposed to do it in the morning.) Given a doctor also prescribed me a pure oil moisturizer for the ear canal to alleviate a ringing in my ear and it actually worked, and the multiple cuticle oils around the place, there are more kinds of topical oil than oil intended for consumption in the flat. Though all of them are safe to eat, come to think of it.

  • Endings: My limited-time employment contract at the Red Cross's thrift store ended in February this year. I liked it there a lot and I was really sad about it.

  • Births, deaths, and marriages, + travel: No significant life events in my vicinity this year; we decided not to go to a mountainous bit of Sweden for Wax's cousin's wedding because it was on the same day as A Tribe Called Red playing in Helsinki and we already had tickets. (That's the first concert we've gone to together since Adam Lambert in 2011. It was amazing.) So that's a No on travel. Helsinki doesn't count; we typically make a day trip several times per year and this year was no different.

  • Personal achievements: I continued to monitor world events and politics regularly and never became seriously depressed! I also wrote a bit more words than before, although no fiction again yet. But it probably helped with the writer's block a bit.

  • Biggest failure: We had this whole project (which was my idea) to update our media server (which is just a spare PC we access over LAN) and install a working headless OS so that we could run it without a monitor connected. We spent over 12 hours on it and eventually all our attempts failed and we ended up buying a new power source and SDD for the spare PC, and after that we installed openmediavault and got it working... but then I was upset because all the HD volumes on it except one didn't have permanent names. (You can set a volume name for hdds or partitions that persists and shows up even when you access from a different install or in a different machine, but not from inside the OS - so far as I know - it requires a bootable usb or disc of Gparted or the like, a partitioning and volume management tool.) It was confusing and there was a lot of checking things trying to figure out which partition had what on it, so I made Wax make me a new Gparted bootable stick and used it to name the volumes... which broke the openmediavault install. It's still broken basically, although most of the files we actually use are accessible. But because the rest of the install is borked, we can't unplug the monitor until we reinstall.

  • Illnesses: This summer the BB got sick and had to go to the vet on short notice, wiping out all our spare money for a couple of months, and then a month or so ago the same thing happened to Chief Inspector Japp, who actually got two X-rays, the little miscreant (although to be fair he was extremely well-behaved at the vet... but in general 'miscreant' is a highly appropriate epithet for Mr Tiny Jerk). I had to wear a lead apron and stand by the table to immobilize him in the right positions to get X-rayed because his tameness has limits and I'm the only person who really handles him regularly.

  • What was most exciting: Probably when my MIL said we could have her heteka - a vintage steel bedframe (we're still waiting for the ability to move it here).

  • Favourite TV: The most recent series of Legion was probably the best new television I saw this year.

  • Best book: The last Dandy Gilver novel, an ongoing series that I've been a fan of for some time. Second place: Max Gladstone's Three Parts Dead, which is the beginning of a new series.

  • Favourite film: Maybe Ocean's 8. Aquaman was also good.

  • Fanfiction fandoms I read the most of: Pacific Rim (new to me!), Kirk/Spock TOS & AOS (largely rereads), Steve/Tony (largely rereads); Venom was a late arrival and I didn't read that much yet, but being new is remarkable, so

  • How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2018? I didn't have one, aside from aggressively lounging and not leaving the house. But I was inspired by the new Tombraider reboot, which had a FANTASTIC fashion concept, to buy a lancer-front 'biker' (or so-called "moto") jacket like Lara Croft's.

  • Life lessons learned: the elasticity of stranded colorwork is significantly less than that of the same knitting in one color so fit is totally different.
