I just opened a story by someone who thinks they used hair gel in Victorian England.

This is now my second favorite Victorian England misconception from fanfic, after the multiple aggravated cases of electrical wiring.

I read a bunch this morning, so let me see if I can remember which one it was... okay, this one.

I once read a fic where one character got antsy about his date being late so he whipped out his mobile phone to text. In 1941.

ETA: and have heard of (though not read myself) of 17th century setting fics with characters wearing underwear of a decidedly 20th/21st century nature!

My favorite thing about reading about medieval and earlier clothing reconstructions is the stuff they don't know because there's not enough archaeological evidence and the contemporaneous artwork and literature only glancingly describes a garment - usually underwear - because everybody obviously knows what they are! I read somebody's thesis-length theory-reconstruction-thing proposing an alternate type of undergarments for some particular portion of Italy in some particular portion of the medieval era one time.
