o brave new construction zone!

cimoreneWhen we first arrived here in July, there were a couple of days in which builders and plumbers were going back and forth to finish up details in the kitchen and bath on this side of the house and during those days the cats both made daring escapes under their feet into the Under Construction side several times. (That is to say, Snookums was over there several times and the BB was over there like, six times in one day. We all overheard construction workers remarking on her tiny speedy sneakiness and penchant for slithering past.) After the zipper in the plastic tarp door thingy ripped and we had to repair it with layers of duck tape, it wasn't really operational as a door and people started walking around outside instead; and then more recently I put a folded-up laundry rack across the the doorway instead, which acts as an effective cat barrier. The cats haven't noticed the switch, or that I've been using the laundry rack door and simply moving the laundry rack back and forth for a couple of weeks now - evidently the door simply wasn't a door anymore in their minds.
But just now, this evening when Wax and I were checking out what was done today, a furtive orange head emerged from behind the building materials leaning on the wall! Snookums was very brave and exploratory. I picked him up and carried him around on my shoulder for the rest of our time there, and he was very silent and overawed right until we came back to the warm side and closed the laundry gate behind us. Then he sat down next to it, wrapped his tail around his feet and started intently watching the plastic tarp and the empty side of the house... and then the plaintive yodeling started. It's the "pining for the fjords" yodel, the same one they make when they want to play outside (they've pretty much given up on actually going outside for the time being, because they've been on the stoop and noticed that it's cold).
