I know this isn't a novel thought because I think it every time I read a bunch of Harry Potter fanfiction and I've probably posted about it more than once before, but:

Usually when Harry is too well characterized I find the fic too annoying and sometimes I can't even finish it, and I definitely prefer fic where he's unrealistically not-stupid.

I'm enjoying one right now where he's way too calm and reasonable, and just a couple of days ago I finished another one where I kept thinking "What an idiot! That's definitely in character... ugh."

Trying to remember if this is the only fandom/fanfic character I feel that way about...

Have you read HPMOR? I fou d it so much more satisfying than canon.

I read the beginning of it, and it was REALLY fun at first, but it held together less well as it progressed and I stopped after a while. But it is a good example - more an edge case really; that's not the kind of changes most fanfiction make, as they tend to diverge from canon towards the end and presumably they either don't notice that they've written a different characterization, or want to make it less obvious to the reader that they have.
