blanket replacement project
3 Jul 2020 01:07 pmI still haven't decided what to do about the career counseling course dilemma thing. My parents advised me to withdraw (or rather, postpone) and even offered to send us a month's worth of income (which isn't needed unless we have an unforeseen expenditure in that time like an emergency trip to the vet or a car breakdown, however).
You'd think that would make it easy, but I'm struggling because, well, as Wax pointed out, the risk is huge if someone is infected but basically nil if they're not and the odds that one of them is are very low. Turku has had about 500 confirmed cases, but they're only testing severe respiratory infections and their traced contacts (maybe only if the contacts have some symptoms?). I've seen some estimates that the cases requiring hospitalization could be as little as 10% of the infectious people (counting mild cases and asymptomatic carriers), but if they're testing contacts it shouldn't be as high as ten times that. The city is full of 'essential' workers (and retail workers because like, the garden center and Ikea are not actually essential, but they're open) working and many of them commuting on the buses and obviously, most of them have not gotten sick, and that does make me feel like this hesitance is potentially overcautious. Plus, my friend who's been working at Ikea since March isn't an 'essential' worker and my life isn't more valuable than hers! And I want to have the career counseling and the work placement, but... unpaid internships aren't essential. Adult education groups aren't essential and if they were, they could probably be accomplished through distance learning (though of course there are technological barriers there, but hello?) I think I'll probably withdraw, but it isn't easy.
I finished my second blanket yesterday! After over a year! This used up a huge bag of white cotton yarn I bought from an acquaintance some years ago and I will dye it once we have a washing machine again.

This weight of knitted cotton blanket is my favorite bedcover when it's warm. It's got tons of small mistakes in it, but nothing egregious: I'm very happy with the result. Wax is literally never cold enough for a wool blanket like my zigzag blanket, so I think we actually don't need anymore handmade blankets now. Blanket replacement accomplished?! I'm making a cover for my footcube out of remnants from the zigzag blanket now. It still feels too hot to pick back up the hoodie I started last fall.
