so in the middle of the night our dorm has acquired a new sign on the door. this is what it says.

stop!

if you're going to pee in the hall, remember...

urine smells gross.

&people have to live here.

and the really scary thing is that the stairwell does smell like urine about 80% of the time, and really, i'm not surprised, given that there has been a tshirt between the two bathroom stalls all week now.

okay, how does it sound good? or do you mean the sign? see, actually, we had a Fun!Incident with this today in Japanese. my drill partner asked where i lived, so i used that opportunity to tell about it, but then i realized i didn't know how to say "sign" or "door" or really any of it, so i said it in english. and then he was like: "uh--wow. sugoi--i mean... sensei?"

"yes?"

"how do you say, 'wow, that's too bad'?"

"well," she said, "there are about a million ways to say that in japanese, so maybe you had better tell me what you're saying it about..."

so once again i told the story in english, which, like a silly adolescent, i couldn't do without laughing. and she said "tottemo iya desu ne?"

partner was confused.

i wrinkled my nose. "you mean very disagreeable?"

she laughed. "yes."

"well," i said fervently, "it certainly is."

buahahahaha!!! I love that someone had the balls to put up the sign. Right on to them! Because, yeah, pissing in the hall or stairwell IS gross. Go find a toilet, yo.

and in the bathroom it says "please do not leave personal items in the bathroom," and yet, right now, there is a tshirt and a dirty pair of boxers in there. and the boys who use the urinal right in front of you? they usually don't wash their hands and frequently don't flush. i'm seriously considering adding a sticky note to the sign to the effect of "personal items or undergarments, especially dirty undergarments."
