Abstract art icons: Hilma af Klint

Hilma af Klint (1862 – 1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic who created some of the earliest abstract paintings in Western art - a considerable body of her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky and Mondrian. She belonged to a group of women called "The Five" who developed a complex structure of mystic beliefs influenced by Theosophy and stressing the use of séance. Her paintings, which sometimes resemble diagrams, were a visual representation of complex spiritual ideas. (Paraphrased from Wikipedia)

Yeah, it's nice to learn about an interesting character like this (even if it's also a little enraging when she's not better known - of course part of it is that she wasn't interconnected with all the other modern and abstract artists, who in a lot of cases were actively working, studying, exhibiting together, and were friends - but that's not really an excuse for the art history lessons).

She does seem to be kind of relegated to the "Women in Art" and the "Swedish Artists" ghetto!

I just went to an exhibition of her art last weekend. It was amazing to see some of these in person and then have this pop up right after! Will definitely save some to use as I was just typing up the experience.
