Henri Matisse icons, part 1: the paper cutouts (coral)

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter, sculptor, printmaker and draughtsman who was one of the most well-known figures in modern art. He is generally regarded alongside Pablo Picasso as one of the foremost leaders in the revolutionary changes in Western art of the 20th century. His early paintings (starting in 1900) earned him a name as one of the Fauves. In later life, when he was prevented from painting by his health, he created an important body of work in the medium of cut-paper collage. — [Paraphrased from Wikipedia]

The coral and leaf shapes from his cut paper work are some of my favorites, and that's what you mostly see here.

Yeah, it is a little sad trying to pick just one! They're really popular as posters, and that's what a lot of these are made from, but I could never buy just one or two to hang on the wall. (I have thought about buying a book of prints though.)

Though if you haven't seen them it's worth googling because some of them cover a whole wall or two (the bottom row has two cropped from a giant one called The Parakeet and the Mermaid, for instance).

Beautiful! I love Matisse, I have a print of his hanging about the door to my hallway. I saw a fantastic show of his work at the Barnes Foundation years ago, wow! I will snag 2nd row from the bottom the middle one and credit you. Thank you!!
