I always drop my phone a lot, and I always go through a lot of tempered glass screen protectors. (My phone is always in a TPU case. I can't deal with the little book-style flip covers.)
My phone always HAS a tempered glass screen protector on it because once, in 2009 or 2010 maybe?, I dropped my phone in the stairwell and it fell face-first on the edge of a marble stair tread and broke in a spiderweb pattern, and the phone only survived because my BIL's bff had a retired phone of the same model and was willing to donate its screen and my wife worked at the Nokia factory and knew how to take it apart and replace it.
I often end up using my phone a while with broken tempered glass on the screen simply because as the phone ages, it gets harder and harder to get new screen protectors, and they get more expensive too, which seems backwards and annoying. I tend to take a while to get around to ordering the replacements in recent years, but I actually got a glass splinter in my fingertip from the chip on the edge of my screen protector a few weeks ago, and this galvanized me into action.
I used to be able to order three-packs of screen protectors onlnie, then two-packs, and now nobody I can find in the EU, let alone Finland, is selling multipacks. (I thought getting a Samsung this time would make accessories easier to come by, but they're all for the flagship Galaxies. The A range, which is midtier, are just as hard to buy protectors and cases for as OnePluses and Google phones were.)
So this time I finally just ordered ten screen protectors and five camera bump protectors on ebay directly from Shenzen, and to my delight, they arrived not only promptly, but completely without all the annoying extraneous packaging! Just a styrofoam brick with a phone-sized hollow in the middle, and in the hollow, ten little sheets of glass in individual styrofoam bags, ten little dust-remover stickers, and ten little alcohol wipes.
