Both this elderly and severely-weathered bench and this ancient stool have triggered compulsive sanding. The bench had remnants of lacquer that were extremely ready to flake off. Of course you do want to remove all the loose material, but once you've started it's very hard to stop. And the stool had about six layers of paint, maybe more like eight. Wood filler is the alternative to another several days of sanding, probably. On the bench it's just holding it together.
