cimorene: Spock with his hands on his hips, looking extremely put out (frowny face)

Wax sent a message to our pump truck guy and he arrived promptly at 8 this morning, which is in character for him. Too bad he only runs a pump truck, because it's such a relief having a contractor with those habits! So he pumped out the old septic tank under the addition that our Ukrainian pals are renting and then when they got home this afternoon, they walked through the basement and discovered for the first time that there was standing sewage water on the floor around the basement drains again.

This happened most recently two years ago, because we didn't actually realize there was a septic tank that needed emptied yearly, but all the water went away when he drained the septic tank then, and we just hired some professional cleaners to disinfect the entire basement floor. This time there's some sort of blockages, which is just fantastic. And of course, we hadn't thought to check either so we didn't find out until after business hours. The nice plumber we consulted the last time our radiators needed fixing has retired in the meantime, but luckily my boss's husband is a contractor (an industrial one, but he has contacts) and I texted him and asked for a recommendation. So Wax has a number to try tomorrow.

I looked back at this journal and discovered, though, from my post in Nov 2021 the last time we had sewage in the basement, that I had gone back and consulted my paper journals from 2019 that time and they informed us that when Wax's mom had the septic tank emptied originally it lasted 4 and a half hours and they had to bring someone in to water-blast out some blockages. This all happened right before Wax's mom died and also neither of us were there at the time - Wax was working in Turku and I was in a career counseling workshop in Turku - so I was just recording what she had told us in the journal. Obviously, the subsequent sudden death, money running out, and pandemic situation drove most of the memories of late 2019 out of our minds entirely, so it's a good thing I kept that journal. (The original tank-emptying service wasn't the same one we're using now - we don't know who she used, but it was someone who spoke Finnish and our current guy is a local Swedish speaker.)

Anyway, I faithfully wrote down the dates and occurrences in my current paper journal, which has had very little written in it lately because I have to use a planner for work and I exhaust most of my hand-writing energy there. But it's indexed and page numbered so it's there to consult in future.

After we find someone to blast the blockages, we need to hire the garage-sanitizing guys again too. It's always something, isn't it?

A note on terminology: our garage and basement are on the same level. Our side of the house is built on bedrock, and has only a sort of dirt crawlspace, but the bedrock drops off abruptly and there's a garage under the addition that opens directly onto the street, and the garage adjoins a poured cement basement that contains a sauna and shower and a laundry room and a utility room. So the garage drain and the sauna/shower drain are both connected to the septic tank and they're at almost the same height, just next to each other.

Oh no! What a mess! Glad you haven't had any problems in a while though, at least. Five years is a long time. Good luck!!!!
