cimorene: A drawing of a person in red leaving a line of blue footprints in white snow (winter)
We've been getting some sunlight during the day for the last week and a half or so. Only a few hours per day appeared at first, but there's been a few days where there was no cloud in the way through the entire period when our East and South windows get sun!

That is probably why I have started to have a little more energy in the day. Friday I cleaned the whole counter more thoroughly than I have since Christmas - putting away the trays and cutting boards that don't fit in the sink, hunting down the crumbs behind the stupid toaster.

The temperature dropped suddenly two nights ago, though, and the radiators were failing to catch up all day yesterday (it never got over 12°C/53°F in the bedroom, the coldest in the house) and all day I kept having to huddle up in a nest of blankets in my armchair because it was too cold to have my hands on top of the blankets to sew. It seems to be warming again this morning and is only a little below freezing. There's a lot of fresh snowfall from the weekend though, and the birds have eaten nearly all our peanuts. The bird feeders are constantly busy. Wax says we need to buy more right away so there is no break in our yard's supplies that could traumatize the little dinosaurs.

Some searching landed me at an old school like, 1999-style threaded messageboard for Finland's poultry keepers and it's called MUNANETTI (Egg Net... or DickNet in slang), LOL, and I eagerly went through the entire list of dealers.

There's someone in Pori who has quail and a bunch of kinds of ducks and easter eggers, painted silkies, and the kinds that lay light blue and olive eggs respectively.

There's someone in Salo who has peacocks alongside their chickens, and someone near Helsinki who has two varieties of peacocks and four kinds of ornamental chickens.

There's someone from practically the next city over who has 7 cool breeds including silkies of Hannibal fame (magnificent but fiddly to keep), Cochin bantams, and Booted Bantams (plus the 'polish' chickens - the punk ones with floofy head crests - but I don't particularly want those). Someone else nearby has Wyandotte bantams.

There are two sub-varieties of native Finnish breed from this area, the Piikkiöläinen or Piikiönkanta and the Tyrnäväläinen, both extremely popular, but all of those are the big kind. I want the small kind because the big kind are too large to comfortably perch on your hand, so you'd be training them to fly to objects or perches instead. This isn't to say I ONLY want the small kind - a couple of full sized ones for eggs would be good - but my focus is on bantams for Project Flying Chickens.

NB: This is all speculative future research; I would not be acquiring chickens until after moving to Pargas (which would lengthen Wax's current bus commute unacceptably) and probably until we no longer have rabbits (up to 6ish years from now, by lifespan).

ME: Doves don’t provide tons of delicious chicken eggs, but chickens can’t be flight trained.

MY WIFE: Of course chickens can fly. You know about my chicken who could fly. Chickens just DON’T fly because they don’t need to.

also from Tumblr yesterday

So, of course my ultimate life goal evolves somewhat - I always want to move to Pargas, but I used to want sheep, then goats, and now I think maybe just chickens (maybe also goats). NEW PLAN:

1. Move to Pargas
2. Get fancy chickens
3. Flight train said chickens
4. ??
5. Profit (probably not profit; just enjoy flying chickens)
