when i was at the post office friday mailing cookies and the arm of the starfish to [livejournal.com profile] ninglor, the clerk was really rude. what is it with postal workers? he was sitting there drumming his fingers as i counted out the change... dude, do you NOT want me to pay? shut the fuck up.

my stomach's been irritable the past few days. fortunately this has not stopped me from writing things. just as i feel like i'd like to write about 75% of the time, they give me half again as many hours as i want! bastards. the sucky thing is there's no way that doesn't make you sound terrible to ask to be given fewer hours, is there?

make something up about obligations at home. are you ever alone with perrin? like babysitting? you could sorta expand on that a little bit. "well, you see, i would love to work thirty hours this week, but i really need to be home some to watch the cutest little three/four/whatever-year-old you've ever seen." that way it doesn't come off like you're lazy and just don't want to work that much. which isnt to say that you ARE lazy, because i understand completely, but yeah, that's how it'll come off.

heh, some of my random high school jobs turned me into a pro at trimming my work week down to an acceptable 10-15 hours. that was always my favorite excuse. because my parents DID work evening shifts, and i had two younger brothers. granted they probably would've been fine by themselves, but i didn't tell my employers that.

::nods sagely:: i'm trying to think how to phrase it that i just need *more* time, not any *specific* sets of hours to myself.

what kind of profession are his parents in? are they freelancers or nine-to-fivers? because you could say something like, "so and so is working on his/her next project, and i'd really like to be able to help them out by keeping their son out of their hair for a while, especially since i'm living with them rent-free and all, so if you could just cut five or ten hours from my schedule, i'd really appreciate it..." etc?

wellllll taumas works from home, but he doesn't freelance, exactly... he's partly self-directed, and then he goes out (scheduling his own times) to meet stores... he's a salesman-regional representative for a grocery distributor. well. hmm.

It took me about two months to gather up the courage to ask for fewer hours, but boy am I glad I did it. They were surprisingly understanding about it, too.

i'd better not do it after only two weeks i think. ::worry::

jenny says they must be giving me over the standard number (although they are chronically overstaffed and said they weren't really in need of hirees when they hired me) because they like me. i suppose i do do a good job, although it's amazing to me that anyone can fail to do a good job of sacking groceries, making small talk, and carrying said groceries to people's cars... i mean, it's not rocket science.
