an old gentleman today called me SIR, and then said 'oh, ah, i've just realized that i made a mistake. thank you ma'am--now will you forgive me.' then he explained the problem was girls wearing their hair short like me and boys wearing theirs long. i said we did it just to confuse people.

then we had the Where Are You In School Are You Here At Tech chat, and i gave the ~~I Wouldn't Be Caught Dead At Such A Podunk School~~ Actually I'm Taking Leave But I'd Be a Junior response. and it came out that i was in massachussetts, and he drawled, 'well, i'll tell ya what, for someone from up thar you talk pretty good.' i said, 'i'm not from there, but people from massachussetts have very good accents'; and he told a story about a guy from boston at a conference whom he couldn't understand, and revealed more of his character than he probably realized by telling me he was complaining about this 'fella' in the 'mess' one day and another 'fella' from 'down arizona' said 'you're sure one to talk!' finished the old gentleman, 'he thought i had a pretty good brogue too.' it also came out that he believes 'we' in texas 'don't talk too bad.'
